Frameless Cabinets: Paintable Edge Banding Recommendations?

Building a series of builtin 3/4" ply cabinets that are frameless with full overlay doors.

Client wants it painted white to match trim.

Painting the faces is no problem, but would love some advice for edge banding that is paintable and very durable (heavily used cabinets). I don't want the edging to come off shelves..or the paint to flake off the edging!

Are the boxes going to be painted or a laminate?

I would consider ripping solid edge banding, 1/4" thick by the side width.

Fully painted boxes.

Doesn't the 1/4" strip interfere withy the placement of euro hinges spaced 5mm from the edge?

The screws for the hinges are 37mm from the front edge of the cabinets (at least in my world).

If you're making frameless cabinets, the screws that mount the hinges to the cabinet sides are 37mm back from the edge of the cabinet, therefore there's no interference with the edge banding. Look at the attached photo.

Edge banding if applied correctly shouldnt peel off even with heavy use. Poplar banding is a good paintable option....

As Willy posted, euro cabs take a different hinge than the face frame cabinets. The screws are much farther back than you're used to.

Blum Clip top Blumotion 110 and 110+ overlay hinges for the base cabinets. Bookshelves on top won't have doors. Base cabinets will be ~30" wide each, with two doors in each. No drawers.

Sounds like the 5mm cup issue for the door isn't an issue for folks, as I'm going to use flat panel doors?

Explain what you mean by "5 mm cup issue". I believe you are referring to the edge offset to the cup hole edge.

Tom

The edge of the door to the edge of the hinge cup on the door is 5mm. On a flat panel door, you have to edge band. If done with .5" or .75" hardwood, the cup will be in the wood.

I just wanted to double check that it minimally impacts the hinge strength, and that banding doesn't break off... It wouldn't be an issue with 1-3mm thick edging...

Banding on the door itself has never been a problem with me.  Even if you use hardwood and drill into it for the cup, the hinge cup is well supported by the two mounting screws that sit well back from the banded edge.  Your original post was not clear that you were talking about the doors, not the carcass.

Once the banding is glued on the joint is stronger than the wood itself.

Hi Tom,

Do you have a photo of how this looks?  Sorry...noob question.  I'm new at this.  Seriously...lol  Thanks in advanced.

These are all I have right now. You can see the side edge band complete in the second photo. The one side is wider so I could trim to fit.

Yup. What they said. Also, depending on the order you do things, if you drill for the mounting plates (on the boxes) before you edge band don't forget to subtract the banding thickness from the 37mm drilling distance.  ::)
