Hello Everyone,
I'm a new user who has recently moved from UK to live in the South of France (Nimes) and am in the process of fitting out a totally new workshop (It only happens once so it going to be the best). After much research I ordered lots Festool goodies  :P ... so here is what Santa just delivered: Domino, TS55, OF1010, CTM33, MFT1080, MFS700, Rotex 150 (I got a Free Festool Watch with it), the Kapex is on Back Order.
Just about worked my way through a fun weekend testing each one. The best thing so far is the CTM33 Vac, no dust at all !!! The Domino is so easy to use even my 7 year old Girl can work it, but she prefers the Router though.

The non-Festool stuff includes, a whole set of veritas Handplanes, Drill Press with laser guide, LUREM 400 Bandsaw, LUREM 310 Combination Machine (Planner/Thicknesser/TS/Spindle) (Lurem was recently bought by Metabo)

I suppose I should think about buying some wood now? The local supplier stocks mostly Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Boxwood so that is what I'll be working with for the time being.

If anyone is in the area, feel free to drop in for Tea and have a play with the toys....

Best Wishes,
Mike

Welcome from rainy Texas to the forum!  Sounds like you have your hands full.  The real question remains... what did you have get to the LOYL in kind?  ;D  What projects do have on the board, so to speak?

I think I'll be paying LOYL for a long time to come  ::). She wants a new Coffee table to go with the new sofa's, looks like that will be first (will make it in Cherry I think to go with the red sofa), we also need some internal doors in the new house.

Mike,

Welcome to the forum from rainy NorthWest USA (Washington State).

My wife and I spent and week in Provence and visited Nimes.  I thought the Pont du Gard and Arena were two of the most amazing structures I'd ever seen.  I envy you - great food, great wine, nice people, and history everywhere you turn.

Please post pics of your projects here: User Projects.  I'd especially like to see the internal doors because that's one of my future projects too.

If you have have any questions about posting pics, the Photo Tutorial - Taking, Editing, and Posting Forum Images should help.

Regards,

Dan.

Congrats on the new toys. Nimes sure is a beautiful place, I am also an Englishman, but I live in the best place on earth, (sorry, its true) I live in the Pacific Northwest (Washington State) Sure rains a lot, but its like heaven on earth.
I have mved around the USA a lot, but we always end back here.
Just out of interest, whats the cost of lumber there in Nimes? is it rough stock or S4S?

Have fun with the toys.

Paul

Hi Paul,
Washington State is nice (but 9 months of rain a year, you must miss Emgland), Nimes have 300 days of sun a year  8).
Rough Oak is about 1300 USD per cubic metre, Rough Walnut is much more at 3300 USD per cubic metre.  Don't forget we pay about 20% sales tax >:(

Mick

The last place on earth I would miss is England! :P

The rain is not as bad as people make out, I believe NY gets more rain fall per year than we do, its all a myth, to stop too many people moving here.

Cherry here is about $6.95 a bdft

Rough Oak is about ... per cubic metre

This is the best reason I've heard for NOT converting to metric. If you thought pricing wood by board foot was little arcane try thinking of it in terms of cubic meters.  ???

Here is some help in translation.
1 cubic meter= 424 board foot,
$ 1300/m^3 = $ 3.07/board foot
$ 3300/m^3= $ 7.78/ board foot.

Oak seems to be pretty cheap compared to what we pay here (N. California), walnut seems to be about par.

We stopped in Nimes during last Christmas holidays while on a river cruise. A delightful place.

Mike enjoy the new toys er tools :) ;)

Vijay.

Two of my brothers-in-law have recently bought houses (roughly) in your area - at St Quentin and Masmolene so, while it's an area I have spent time in over the years, I expect that the frequency, if not the length of visits will increase.

I moved from the UK to Normandy far too long ago.  Maybe we'll get together one day.  I'm interested in the drill press you say you have bought.  Could you post the details please?

Hey, I want a Festool watch too - but only if you get Sinn (another fantastic German company) to fabricate them for you.  ;D

Hey, Mickey.... where's the photos? I'm dying to see just what a metric watch looks like  ;D

Michael,

Actually, it is dead easy to compute the volume of lumber in cubic meters, if you have a pocket calculator. You simply multipy the three dimensions in mm together, and divide the result by a billion. Or, if your calculator can't handle 10 digits, divide by 1000 twice.

Hello All,
Sorry for not replying sooner, in the process of preparing to move house....
Richard the Drill press (recommended by my French Dealer) was Fartool DP35C with laser alignment.

The festool watch can be seen below, notice there are no numbers (metric version), there is also a new systainer for it ;D
