It's completely useless to an average hobbyist, but there is an alternative. Airless sprayers are fantastic, but they have one huge drawback to low volume users. That is the amount of fluid/finish that gets theoretically wasted in the line, assuming that you wash it out each time. In high volume shops, like where I work, this rarely needs to be done. We use the same pre-catalyzed Lacquer for most projects and it stays ready to spray at all times. We can go through 5-15 gallons a week, and it produces very little overspray.
Any other finishes or paints get sprayed with automotive type HVLP guns, but there again, huge compressor.
