Furniture and Cabinetmaking Magazine

Furniture and Cabinetmaking blows fine wood working out of the water. I cannot do without this publication.

I'm not sure whether it was available on the old Newstand for ipads, but on the new one, you can preview the magazine before buying.

Yes but unless I made an error as a new user, only the first few pages.

I had to pay $2.99 for the app on iTunes but it included one issue of the magazine. After that you can either buy per issue or subscribe in 6-12 month increments.

The articles are better than in FWW over the past few years. I stop buying FWW when after the 37th review of nail guns...  [tongue]

I've raved about this magazine for a long time now. It's different than any North American magazine I know of on the market. There isn't an article on "dovetail secrets" every issue. The furniture covered in the magazine is more than just American arts and craft era, it goes from modern contemporary, to classical to gunsmithing. Great articles on design, tool maintenance, finishing, you name it. The magazine to get!

+1 what everyone has said. I pickup a hardcopy as my excuse to make a trip to highland hardware.

It is vastly superior to FWW, in my newbie opinion.

This thread went off on a major tangent! Maybe the mods should rename it or stick it in the relevant section.

I subscribe to the hard copy mag in the UK for $60, but the price for a 12 month sub on an ipad is only $40.

I also like the fact they focus on the result and the best way to do it, rather than get too snobby about hand tools or critical of Festool's prices.

I haven't gone browsing, but have they changed the distribution to use the Newstand? Only reason I care is when I looked into this last year, it was their app you buy (free issue then do in-app purchases for more) but the reviews at the time all included "very crashy". The app hadn't been updated in nearly a year at the time, which tells me they hired drive-by software contractors and the code was likely a brutal mess.  If it went to newstand, i'd trust it more.

Gee, what if I miss the "18V drill show-down" articles... uh, no.

Paul, it's very slick and stable on Windows 8.1 and android, I imagine osx and ios would be just as good. You're missing out!

Paul, I subscribed yesterday AEST?, and it is in Newstand on my IPad  OS7.  [smile]
No problems so far, except for, as I said above, limited preview option.

Excellent on both counts... The one issue a friend from the UK sent me was cover to cover good and happened to feature an edge treatment I want for a project so it won me over easily.  Hey, this is from the UK, tell me the words aren't on the wrong side of the page!  j/k  [tongue]

I got the app for my iphone and purchased one issue, and I can only go through 3 pages before it's stuck "downloading".  The content may be great, but their delivery simply sucks.

Dumb question: in Newstand, I go to the store, search for the magazine and it shows me the app that has nothing but negative reviews. I see you're in Australia. Might be the market. Maybe the publisher is releasing them as Newstand documents for sale in Australia, but isn't doing it here.  Every review of the app is scathing about stealing your money.  For example, my iPad application (day job) could have multiple versions for different markets like Canada vs US vs Europe, etc.  They aren't good about letting you change your iTunes store to a different locale.  May need to VPN into an Australian address to get the Newstand version :)

I just wrote them on their contact page (publisher, not the drive-by consultants) to ask if this is really a newsstand subscription and why it isn't available here.  If the crappy developers have some contract that says the publisher cannot compete with a newsstand document, I'd say they never upheld their end of the contract on writing code that even marginally works.

PM,

I downloaded the app from US iTunes and it ended up in my Newsstand on iPad. Downloading an issue took several minutes but I could start reading while it was in progress, if I skipped ahead via the TOC it loaded those pages & then filled in the ones I skipped over.

I am clueless as to the different coding approaches but overall the app seems to work okay for me.

Only downside so far is all those ads for pretty tools that I can't get over here...

Well that sounds promising. Could always try it for the cost of the app and one issue.

I know this thread is about the App but I bought a years subscription to the hard copy version using Topcashback (in the uk). I got 12 issues for £35 and get a further £5 as cashback so it ends up costing only £30. If anyone is interested, you sign up with topcashback and search for "magazine subscriptions".
