General router question - looking to learn

Hello FOG -

I have had the OF1400 for about 2yrs. Love it. For those 2 years i did all my routing using the guide rail, or bearing-based bits.

I recently bot the CMS-VL, and used the precision plate/incra ls positioner to get an exacting fence. (no fence wars, i like the accompanying fence a lot too, for other uses)

This is my first router table. After using it for a couple of weeks, I have to ask: outside of routing on large panels (say plywood, etc) AND dovetail templates -- anywhere you can't hold the workpiece safely/steadily over the table -- where else or why else would you use your router in the unmounted position? Ever..?

In other words, I am trying to learn when it is BEST to use it in the table, and when it is BEST to use it 'un-mounted'...

Thanks,

Jason

It comes down to experience. Small / medium  items on the table. Big pieces about 3ft square or more handheld. Both reasons for ease of use and safety. Some router also can only be used in a table, such as panel raising bits, stick and cope etc

Any time I'm using a template, which includes the MFS.

I use templates made from 1/2" MDF for any repetitive cuts.

The MFS is brilliant.  I only have the -400 but I use it far, far more than I thought I would when I bought it.

Hand held for edge routing on large pieces such as a table top especially if it is round or curved. Long boards too.

Good question. Here are a few examples where I bring the router to the wood.

Grooves and dados. Inlay work. Hinge recesses. Using a router sled. Hole boring.

good answers, all of you. thanks.

i don't know why i waited so long to get a table...the amount of wacky setups (including spacers, jigs, etc) i have spent a lot of time creating...well, i guess it stimulates a certain part of the brain...but it was dumb to wait.

thanks again

I'm interested in the MFS. Can you give me examples of your use?
