I have unlimited with Verizon, but I have to pay tethering to verizon.  So, I jailbroke my phone and bought the apps (20 dollars, I know there is another free) and I can tether all I want free of charge.

Jailbroke is legal so no worries there.

If you had to guess, how many GB of data do you use.  Should I go with 2GB or 4.  Not sure what I will be using.  No way for me to determine.  They say an Iphone uses more data then a droid or blackberry.

Pick the lowest amount (2 GB) and monitor your data usage throughout the month, maybe once a week.  If it looks like you're going to go over and it appears that your first month will be typical, then call Verizon and up it.  If you don't check and you get a high bill due to overage, call Verizon and have them up the plan + back date it to adjust for the overage so you pay less.

You guys hear of that new Mcdonald's sandwich ? the "McSteak"? I'll get me coat. Android out!

Right now I am leaning towards AccountEdge Pro or the NEW QuickBooks for Mac 2012.

AccountEdge Pro:
It is based off of the respected MYOB program.
It is designed for Mac.
It works with the iPad and iPhone.

QuickBooks for Mac 2012:
EVERYONE uses it.

Thanks for all of the help guys.  I think you are leading me in the right direction.  Certainly a less expensive direction.  And probably one that I will actually use and not waste.

What say you on the above mentioned?
Thanks

Suggest you ask your accountant which application he/she uses and go with that application so you can exchange files hassle-free.  Good luck!

Congrats on your switch I think you'll come to find the idea that there's a windows app your missing will become gee how would I ever do this with windows. For example check out Devonthink pro and the fujitsu scan snap for going paperless

You might want to look at this website for iPhone issues...

http://lifehacker.com/5738508/our-biggest-ios-annoyances-and-how-to-fix-them

most of those "annoyances" listed have been removed or tidied up with the new iOS 5 coming in another month, running it now on my iPhone and iPad.  customize your notifications so they are not intrusive at all. wireless syncing across all your devices with the iCloud free account, wireless sync with your pc hover wifi. over the air software updates and much much more. dropped calls? i live in a good coverage area and never experienced it that often to annoy me.

Now if only that new iPhone would come out.
I am hearing around Wednesday, October 12th.
Just over a month away.

Sorry to break the news to you JJ, but there's no new iphone coming out in October.  It's merely a full body skin for your current model with a "5" on the back.  Enjoy!  [big grin]

What?  What does that mean are you suggesting I just get the 4?

No, I think that's just Ken's attempt at humour! [poke]

Jonny's correct.  I was just poking fun at the craziness going on over the unexpected and unknown.  Still, I'm very serious about you having to stand in line behind me at the Apple store.  First come, first serve, you know.  [tongue]

It is the same data that is transfered in internet.  The diffirence is most of the young guys use iphone and they watch a lot of youtube videos.
I don't do that much, I think 3G is not ready for video streaming just yet. Iphone uses 3G networks.
I only use it to read newspapers when I am in the road, connect (VPN) to my company network and work (developing programs and testing them).
I watch the occasional video posted in FOG and some other stuff but it is just a 1 to 5 % of my iphone usage.
If you go with the provider tethering then it depends where do you want to watch movies, if you use your iphone then it will go against the standard usage,
if you tether then it will go against the alloted time for that.
The caveat is if you are tethering to your ipad or computer and then you leave it open (the tethering option)  and start using your iphone,
then you are using the tethering time nor the standard iphone time, so be careful.

Good to know.

The next question.
We have an iMac in the office.
I am looking to get something for the home office and for the field.
I was thinking of getting the iMac for home and an iPad for the truck.
But with the new iPad around the corner I am thinking I should wait.
What I am really considering for the truck is the 11" MacBook Air.  Just slightly bigger then the iPad, but it does it all since it is a full computer.  Then I tether between the iPhone.  Would you guys agree, get the Mac or is it overkill?  Is the iPad the way to go?
By the way AccountEdge is leading the pack for my software decision.
You guys have been very helpful.

I would think through exactly what you want to do when in the truck and not at home.  Keep in mind that the iPad is not a true pc while the AirBook is.  If you want to work in the truck like you where at home then the  AirBook is the way to go.  There is a lot you can do with the iPad, but keep in mind it does have its limitations.

I have a MacBook Pro and love it.  I use it a work (I am a accountant/controller ) and due to work and certain business apps I have to run parallels with WindowsXP.  It works great if you ever have to go that route for anything.

I want an iPad but have the debate of new Festool tools or and iPad.  (Festool usually wins!)

You will get a whole bunch of answers on this as well.  Here is my 2.5 cents worth.

Really look hard at what you intend to do once out in the field.  Are you really going to need to have a full flown laptop with you?  Are you spending more time working with your hands or your head?  At this point you have told us that your are paper based right now.  I can see being able to create your system to not need a laptop in the field.  With the ability of having forms and spreadsheets and word processing documents on an ipad and then being able to email them as an attachment to the office for printing or further use and even emailing back to you, I don't see any real advantage to a laptop on a normal basis.

You could always think of a hybrid.  You could consider a 13 or 15 inch macbook for home with a larger monitor and when you anticipate needing it you take it with you.

Peter

They each different but great at what they do. If you are going to do a lot of data entry, very long Emails and need to operate software that is only Mac base I would get the MacBook air. If you are doing mostly data review, taking notes for bid, showing off pictures and email management I would go with the Ipad. It is still the most portable computing device with great screen surface. I discovered for 95% of what I do i just need the Ipad and the 5% can wait till I get back to my IMac. If you get an Ipad forget the tethering just get the 3G and the 250 MB plan. That usually covers my need every month and most place including people homes have WiFi. The idea of carrying an extra cable and hooking it up to my phone defeats the design and ease of use of the Ipad.

I like the way you are approaching this problem. You made the key decision, going with apple, and only want to hear the best advice on how to implement it. Makes for a good thread.
