Going All Apple

I'm torn just now between an HTC & a Blackberry.  Not going to pay over £500 for the iphone !

Woodguy;
The Blackberry is a good solution for me.
I recently was given an iPad 2 by my wife so I can use the apps there that are not available for my Blackberry.
I may eventually move to a Droid based phone, but currently (in Canada) I can't find a Droid based device with a keyboard I like.
I think the Blackberry/iPad compliment each other - what I cannot do on the blackberry (lack of carpentry apps) I can on the iPad and vice-versa.  The Blackberry is losing market share and will probably not be "the" phone to have but it has a fairly large user base, and is well supported (for the time being) on the (Rogers) network. If they can just get their OS and Internet systems integrated a bit better the user experience would be that much more improved. For me it's great as a phone/text/email/camera device and I hate the Apple iphone keyboard.
Hope that helps.
Tim

Tim,

You're in RIM country.  How could you want anything else?  [big grin]  Canadian loyalty is keeping them afloat.  [poke]

I only used the blackberry for 1 week & was really starting to like it.  My mate has the HTC desire HD & he loves it.  Because I have the iPad with me most of the time I wouldn't use the inter web & email as much as other users but calls & text are the main uses for me.  I do like the keyboard on the berry.  Decisions, decisions  [huh]

LOL maybe, but they are set to layoff a bunch of folks so maybe loyalty be on the wane.

Unfortunately the whole Canadian market isn't even as large as the north eastern seaboard of the US so I am not so sure we have much of a global impact. We do have two official languages though which is always lots of fun for folks to deal with.

I did forget to mention that the Black Berry messenger (blackberry to blackberry sms etc.) is excellent.

A lot of folks in the neighborhood here use Blackberrys and so their kids get the pass me downs when they upgrade so you are right there is a fairly large user base here.

So, anyone happy or disappointed with the new iPhone announcement?  I really like Siri, but that's about it.  I can wait for the next one.

After spending the last couple of hours reading up on it, I would have to say that it might be a good step if you have a 3GS or earlier like me.  That jump might make sense, but if I were considering a change, I would probably wait until iOS 5 came out and I saw what it could do for my current configuration.

I did kind of expect a whole new design  [huh] But I have a Otter box for a iPhone 4 so this works for me.

Yeah Siri seems cool but I am curious how it works in real life. If it works as advertised then great but my voice command on the 3S is always asking me what I meant lol.

Im going for the pre order on the 7th. My 3s is acting up. Glad I'm up for a new phone, just bought a Mac Air last week and the extra 200 added to the phone would really suck right about now.

I was hoping for more too.  I really thought it was going to have a bigger screen and be a little shorter.  Damn Apple.
Now what?  My plan is to go all Apple.  iMac, iPhone, iPad.  I have a new iMac, which by the way, I have not yet taken out of the box.  I was waiting for the new iPhone so I could take everything into the One on One and have them do everything to them all at once, and take the info off of my old laptop.
I don't think I can wait any longer.  I may have to pull the trigger on the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.
Damn Apple.

I had some hopes, but they passed on 4G AGAIN.

They are doing a lot of smart things with the OS now, but why not increase the screen size and support 4g?

My wife LOVES her IPad, but has no interest in the phone.

A bit disappointed here. My phone could use an update (3g) but I'll think before jumping on this one. The camera update sounds more beneficial to me, than Siri. I can already to remember to call for a dinner reservation.

Perhaps there's a new Festool app called Shane-i that goes along with it, and reminds you to pre-order before all the latest goodies are sold out?  [tongue]

Was secretly hoping for an announcement on a new ipad, too.

No Jobs, no Apple. They better have another release in the spring/early summer. There's no way that phone can remain competitive tech wise for another years, it already doesn't stack up to other top of the line smart phones on the market that have been on the market for months. A smart person would skip the 4s in my opinion

I believe the iPhone5 IS quite a ways through development, yet is being held off for reasons such as poor implementation of 4G service throughout the entire country and parts supplier's time schedules.  Those pictures of circuit boards and phone cases that appear very different are probably leaks of the next version.

I didn't think Tom Cook did very well, publically speaking, pacing back and forth so much, trying to emulate Steve Jobs.  I think he would do better just being himself.  I also noticed a number of the speakers looking down at probably a teleprompter, way too much.  They should look at how Scott Forstall spoke.  Ok, maybe this does sound ridiculous, but I couldn't help noticing it while watching them for more than an hour and half.  All in all, it was a rather boring announcement.

The reason I think Siri is so great, not because we've got an advanced artificial intelligence on a phone now, but maybe this will reduce traffic accidents, injuries and deaths on the road from inconsiderate drivers who illegally use their phones for talking, texting, emails and other things.  Obviously cell phone laws, enforcement and common sense haven't worked.  Maybe this is another way of attacking the problem and hopefully it will be inexpensively licensed for other cell phone manufacturers to use.

Lots of stuff  out there about strategies for this release.  The one that makes the most sense to me personally is that it is based on contract terms and upgrades and maximizing upgrades and renewals of 2 year year contracts.

In my mind the presentation was far, far below what they have done in the past.  Heck, they didn't plan well enough to get their normal venue - or knew that the wow - or lack of wow - didn't justify the cost to rent.

All that being said, isn't it strange that our expectations for electronic items is so high.  Compare it to baseball where a hitter would be the king of the world if he could hit .500 or a weatherman if he could predict...

Enjoy your phones no matter what brand or colors!

Version 1

Gotta hand it to you Ken.  One liners and micro second screen captures.  Impressive!  Now cut and past an antenna on each and delete the string and you will have version 2.  Then ...  [thumbs up]

Are you kidding, Peter.  That's all I have right now until my contract is up.  So the cans do come in a wireless version?  Awesome!
