A friend of mine is looking for a good exotics dealer in Germany.  He's a luthier and on a deadline, but can't find anything decent at his local haunts (I don't mean high-figured and clear... he can't even find a small stick of what he needs).

If anybody knows of a good Internet/mail-order dealer or better a place he can visit in Germany.  He's in Worzeldorf by N?rnberg.

Any leads would be appreciated...

(and no, no, no, I'm not in Germany... with the Internet you can make friends anywhere!)

Can't help with Germany, but in Kent, England, there is a company called Timberline which is run by a guy whose name I cant recall who trained as a Luthier  and specifically keeps "tonewoods" for musical instruments.

If your friend cant find a source in Germany he could try this firm, they are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Paul,

Bell Forest Products in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a fantastic internet source.  Bell is an excellent source of various domestic and exotic woods and they have shipped to over 50 countries now.

Bell has a vast selection and will work to get whatever the customer needs, no matter how small an order or how large an order... they'll try to work with you.  They also have a "hand pick your board online" feature that allows you to look through around 30 pages of individual boards, of various sizes, and of various species... the board you see is the the board you get with this option.

Check them out at http://www.bellforestproducts.com/

Maybe this helps a little:

Probably the biggest exotic wood yard in Europe, but largely geared up for the wholesale trade; half of the stuff I buy from North Heigham Sawmills has come via Nagels! And probably this is true at Timberline too!

Soundboards for lutes, guitars, violins, cellos etc. I don't know if he cuts lute rib sets, it might be worth asking if you are in Germany. He certainly sells a lot of sycamore / maple backs and sides for violins and cellos.

kind regards, Mike

A little closer to Germany:

The "Anhemse Fijnhouthandel", specialized in exotics. Situated in Arnhem, not to far from the German border.
They don't mill or saw to size, but have an extensive supply in their attic with all kinds of smaller size pieces should you need such.

Thanks to everybody for the replies.  I've sent him over to this thread to give it a look.

But if others have addresses, feel free to post them!  [embarassed]  I'm sure there can't be too much choice :)
