Very sad for family and fans.
Seemed 'salt of the earth' Liverpool lass, who never pretended to be something she wasn't.
A real icon of the 60's.
Always found her rendition of the Sing a Rainbow song touching and evocative, and also the Liverpool Lullaby - quite poignant; a reminder of how things could be, for some, in those days.

Otherwise not sure what, apparently, you might have found objectionable in my post - if you did.
Being a bit defensive I know.
Think that many "youngsters" would roll out of town, scousers or not, if seriously big money plus fame, became available - particularly if their background was one of being relatively hard-up.
In a similar vein - suspect that to be that successful, particularly in show business perhaps, surely requires - in your words - ruthlessness; but think other words could just as easily be used.
Don't think she ever pretended differently - so certainly would agree with Cilla's apparent 'openess'.
No way going to comment on her relationship with her spouse - that was between them as far as I'm concerned.

I live 'over the water' from Liverpool and while I agree that people move around all the time to seek fame and fortune , 'most' ( not all and this is not directed at Cilla) famous Liverpudlians always harp on about how wonderful Liverpool is but never use their fame or wealth to promote what is a culturally very rich but cash poor City.
As I said before, Cilla was by her own admission very ambitious and self centered. She thought the world of her husband and was truly devastated at his passing and she was a genuinely caring person and had a great affinity with the common person.
There is a 3 part series about her early days ( Cilla BBC1) that was sanctioned by Cilla and is definitely worth a watch to get a feeling of the era and what she went through .
Just to reiterate I thought Cilla was brill , the part of my post about leaving Liverpool was more of a generalisation based on solid experience / pet annoyance
