Well for the last week I have been playing with my Graco Ultra and after 1.5 galons of paint I have not been successful in spraying BM Advance or BM Regal Select. I have tried the following tip sizes, 201, 212, 310, 312 and 514. I either get dry spray, craters or rough surface. I have sprayed thinned 5% and straight out of the can with no success. I have sprayed thick and thin with no success. I have adjusted my distance from 6" up to 12" and altered my speed with no success. There is something I'm doing worng and I have no idea. Thank god I didn't purchase a Graco GX19. I would be divorced and have another boat anchor to get rid off. Time for a garage sale.
Thanks to everyone for putting up with me and offering suggestions and advice. Unfortunately there are gods that are not alowing me to acquire the knowledge on spraying paint.
Maybe Home depot is looking for part time staff for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. I'm certain I know how to use a lawnmower.

How bad is the overspray from an airless sprayer like the Graco Ultra? I have a few cabinets to paint in the near future and am thinking of going this route. I'd love to justify the purchase of an HVLP system, but for the limited amount of spraying I'll be doing with products like BIN primer and Sherwin Williams Emerald I think the airless would be better.
What does the word "pearl" mean in the Benjamin Moore world? With General Finishes they have some pearl effecfs that see a lot of uses as glazes etc. Try some other paint to see if you can paint with your equipment. Many people have told you this and I don't think you are hearing them
i had opportunity to sit in on a 2 day seminar. i was amazed to hear how it is not uncommon for them to alter formulations based on product compaints, potential improved performance, cost change of ingredients, availability of ingredients etc. thisis done very legitimately without renaming the product or putting out notices to customers. Food processors have done this since day 1. So when dealing with manufacturer tech support, try to get lot numbers, date manufacture into the dicussion.

Overspray is quite significant. The Graco Ultra has about a 55-65% efficiency rating. That means that 45-35% of your paint goes everywhere but your panel. I would strongly recommend that you spray in your garage with some box fans exhaust the air/overspray outside. If you gave a side door, make sure it is open so you get a good flow of air. Put plastic everywhere. Now the amount of overspray will be determine by a number of factors. The viscosity of the paint, the amount of paint flow, the amount of pressure on the gun, the distance form the surface that you are spraying as well as the speed you are travelling across your surface. The secret is to find the right pressure setting that minimizes overspray but produces a good fan pattern and atomizes the paint. Keep in mind, that this gun dill spray thick paint, but you may need to thin it a bit and use larger tip size. the 514 or 314 are a popular size for thick paint light Duration, Regal Select and BM Advance. Practice on some test panels. Suggestion, make your test panels the same size as a typical cabinet door as it is easy to get a nice coat on a small test panel but more difficult on a large one.PaulH99 said:

Thank you for the feedback! I was planning to do the work indoors (damn New England winter) but this tells me that I might want to wait until it warms up a bit and do the work outside. Or, I could set up a spray booth in my basement and exhaust the air out of a window. That would work for the smaller stuff, but not for some of the larger cabinet carcasses.
If I can bug you with one more question: How does this compare to an HVLP system like the Fuji or Apollo? I don't mind the additional cost involved if it'll do what I want to do.

Hey JC. I think there was a suggestion on on of these pain threads to take your gear in to a BM dealer and see what results they get. Did you ever try that out? I know you are keen on BM but perhaps a different company might treat you better. I sprayed a bunch of cabinet doors with SW Pro Classic and it came out great (unthinned) and payed down incredibly. That was through my Q5.

I will have to double check my notes but was either a 5 or 4 air cap, Q5 at full power, 2 lighter passes and did forget that I used some windex in there. Maybe about 10%. This was over top of a primer coat of BIN, light sand with 400. I sprayed the doors flat. Sanded between coats. I did have a box fan pulling air away but don’t recall seeing a lot of overspray.

So did I bit more testing. Just seem to get away from trying to achieve a great finish coat. This a sample of of what I get when I either spray with Q5 hvlp or the Graco Airless. Get the same results with Advance and Regal Select. This was thinned 10% and sprayed with a 1.8mm needle and cap for HVLP, 2 thin passes and I get the same results with the Graco, thinned or un thinned with either 312 or 314 tip.

Have you sprayed any other brand? Spray some Sherwin Williams, anything else. Make sure the systems and methods you are using can put down a proper coat first. Then if it is truly the issue with BM paints, walk away. Life is short, many other paints available.
BM should be bending over backwards because it makes their paints look undesirable.
I'm no expert on spraying, and I go months between projects needing spraying, but I don't have issues sticking with the paints I know which provide a sprayed coat that clients are happy with. I'm only using a Fuji HVLP system and Graco GX19 hopper. I have no plans to add any further spray equipment until those no longer operate.
