I have created a couple of Granat assortments for the RO 90.

There is one with a Systainer and one without.

I added some of all grits from P 40 to P 400 and in both formats. This again is designed to get people started and hold them for a while until they figure out grits they use most, at which point, they can supplement those grits.

Tom,

I am trying to figure out the options without spending too much time researching the various lines of paper Festool offers. I mostly sand unfinished wood (75%), some paint removal and between-coat finishes (20%) and goofy stuff like cleaning rust off metal or whatever (5%). Of the 75% 1/3 of that is fairing curved or rounded edges and doing fairly serious stock removal to clean up tool marks from spindle sanders, spoke shaves, rasps, & planing non-flat profiles, etc.

I have been using an old 5" PC RO for the aggressive stuff and an ETS 125 with Rubin and Brilliant for finish sanding on typical furniture and casework.

My question is if the Granat assortment is the best all around for this type of work? I plan on buying the RO90 and envision myself using it for working on surfaces that are more often curved than not, and more free-form shaping and smoothing rather than trying to make a larger surface really flat.

I am looking for the best all-around paper and want to limit the number of different types I have to keep on hand.

Thanks,

RMW

I would suggest that you get the RO 90 and an Interface Pad. The Interface Pad is thick and soft and will help with free-form sanding.

The RO 90 comes with a good selection of various grades of mostly Granat. You can try it out and see how it works on your projects. Based on that experience, you will know better what to get for it.

I personally prefer Rubin for rough sanding of bare wood and Brilliant 2 for finer sanding and sanding between finishes. It really depends on the finishes though.

Granat seems to really excel with waterborn finishes and latex or glue. I haven't really tried it with bare wood much so I haven't fully formed an opinion.

Thanks.

Is the reason for creating the Granat assortment (versus some other papers) because the tool is ideal for/targeted towards refinishing applications?
