Saw the following lecture given by the owner of the Gransfors Bruks (GB) axe company posted on another site I frequent.  There seem to be a number of similarities between GB and Festool as a company, the quality of the product they offer, why some consumers purchase the product while many others don't understand why some pay the premium, etc.

Yes, good video- very interesting. I have a couple of GB axes and everything about them is superb.

I find it very interesting that he was trained as an economist.  The big takeaway from that video for me was the notion of "virtual teams."  I suppose there are lots of people on my virtual team, but I've never thought of them as collaborators.

I've got one of GB's splitting mauls, I read the book that came with it, and I can see that it uses minimized production steps vs. other axes at the hardware store.  But I never considered that a GB axe was the product of the "less mass, more info" design ethic.

I appreciate what he had to say but it's obvious that he has an ax to grind....

OK, sorry. I just couldn't stop myself. As far as his economics training goes, that is key. That his why the advice to cut mass and increase knowledge struck a cord with that creative side of his brain. I continually see people under estimate Elon Musk because they view him as a wild eyed scientist & engineer. He is that but he is an economist first and he has a very keen respect for markets and the need to be profitable in order to bring about positive and sustainable change.

Gee, from Hawthorne...fluffs up Elon Musk when not previously mentioned, you must work at SpaceX, huh.  [scared]

I have a Gransfors Bruks made Husqvarna Axe, they're fine tools. They keep switching between GB and Hultafors though, so it's hard to know what will be in stock at your local Husqvarna distributor.
