Had trouble putting the rails in... had to shake the bag upside down. Sounded like it was full of grains..

So cut it open. As it turns out... the reinforcement had become brittle and was all broken. I broke some more and took it all out. Total 550 grams  [eek]

This is the old style guiderail bag with the small pocket for a 800/2 rail.

I have socks that are 15 years old.
Actually, I have a pair of red and white stripe socks with a blue band of stars that I wore to the 1976 US bicentennial celebration.

With socks usually the elastic part goes.

Anyway, the other stuff I got in de same buy is still working perfectly fine and it looks like the guiderailbag will continue to work just as well without the 'armor plating' inside.

Seems the frontpocket reinforcement is still intact.

Can you open a slot across the full width and insert your own stiffener made from a piece of 3mm ply or 3/16" hardboard or something similar.

I have a carrying case for photography lights that had it plastic stiffening pieces crumble into small bits. The case was very floppy after that. I recently had a set of casters with plastic wheels that is supporting a heavy shelving unit start to fall apart. The plastic outer rim of the wheels is breaking off in chunks. I need to determine if the inner wheel can carry the load or do I need to replace the casters.

That will be hard I think since the original armor seemed to be stitched in at some places. The bag also doesnt open that far to allow such an insertion.

But it's still not floppy; the stiffener in the frontside of the 800mm pocket seems to be fine, so that is still there. And with rails in it the stiffness comes from the rails.
