Halder Simplex 12oz Hammer Mallet

I was in the market for a nicer mallet to use instead of the most populat estwing/Vaughn hard/soft mallet. I came across the Halder model and I was intrigued by the replaceable handle/shell/ and heads. I ordered the 12oz because that was comparable to my current Vaughn. I couldn’t find any information, reviews or even pictures  of  this mallet online so I thought I would take the gamble for $30.

When I received the mallet I was thrown off by the size. It is significantly smaller and most noticeable is the smaller circumference of the handle. It def does not feel right in the hand. May take some getting used to. I’m not a fan off the bat but I figured I’ll give it a week at work to prove me wrong.

Anyone used or seen or have any experience with this hammer? I figured at the least this post may help future users find some pictures and maybe relevant information about the Halder Simplex Hammer.

I recently bought the Wiha 83295 split head mallet set in metal case and am very pleased with the set.  These mallets are 20 oz and
have 40mm heads, round and square.  The set came with square and round heads in soft and med hard, and round hard and xtra hard.  The mallets are available in 30, 40 50, 60 and 80mm heads and handles.  Search Amazon for Wiha mallets or go to Wiha's site for more info.

Wow I wish I had seen that one. It’s $100 on amazon but funny enough it’s $50 shipped from amazon.de

Remember, we are woodworkers. We can make new handles for ourselves

I do this regularly. Here is the Veritas cabinetmakers mallet. I found the handle to be thinner than I preferred, and built another. Also added MHMW faces.

A good handle can make-or-break a hammer or mallet. Below is one I designed for ergonomic reasons (the mallet weighs 32 oz!). The handle can be held at the end, or choked up ...

I usually wrap my hammer handles with self sealing silicone wrap, makes the grip larger and grippier.

If you're using Windows you may remember the image resizer powertoy for XP and Vista. When Windows 7 came out it was gone. But there is an alternative that is very good and I have used it for years on Windows7, 8, and 10.

I bought a couple of Halder hammers/mallets a few months ago.  They're OK.  No complaints so far.

I’ve owned a Halder Simplex 40 for over a decade.  At first I was thrown off by the size too, but it’s been my favourite rubber mallet ever since.  Mine has the black (harder rubber) and the blue (soft) head.

A couple months ago, Amazon had these mallets for $10-$15 each. I bought a variety of sizes with different heads and faces. I think these are really interesting as you can swap the head and faces to get the right weight *and* size. Need a larger hammer that's not too heavy.. 50mm, aluminum head. Need a small one that has some omph, 30mm with reinforced cast steel head.

My observations are:
- 30mm is pretty small. Makes a great light mallet for closing paint cans, hammer Dominos, etc.
- 40mm is like a normal hammer size
- 50mm is a little smaller than the size of a dead blow hammer or normal rubber mallet.

The aluminum head is very light, reinforced cast steel is pretty heavy. Add a metal face and you have a pretty heavy hammer.

I doesn't appear that you can use the reinforced cast steel head with the wood handle though, only the fiberglass handle. Aluminum and cast steel are interchangeable.
