Hammer K3 and A3-31 arrived

Another PM sent to woodguy. I just put down a deposit on an A3-31. This is by far the biggest purchase this rookie hobbyist will have made, but I was sold on the space savings as I have a tiny space (102" x 162"). It's a great machine and the footprint is actually smaller than my el-cheapo 6" jointer (not including the beds, which are longer and a good thing at that).

I cant remember but when I Was looking for thickeners I saw a few videos on youtube and one of them I can remember this guy saying how this thicknesser has small ridges going same direction as the feed to allow timber to slide through easily. Does the hammer have this?! I dont think it has when I went the Guy Ashleys work shop to have a look at his hammer machinery.

I have an A3 31 and love the machine. I use Johnson's paste wax and it works like a charm...I wipe it on every so often and before a large planing job and I have not had the issue of wood sticking in the machine. Adjusting the feed rollers helps too -- I had to tweak mine a little to ensure that the pieces were pulled into the machine straight and to eliminate/minimize snipe. If they are not tight enough pieces might stick too. The ridges keep the wood from sticking to the bed of the machine -- this planer and jointer gets the wood so flat that there is suction between the work and the table and if it were smooth I think it would be hard to pick up the pieces after milling. I think the technical term for this is Felder Flat or Hammer Flat and it is similar to using a Festool sander and getting the work Festool Smooth [big grin]. Great machine(s) for the money and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for increased capacity and a smaller footprint.

My salesguy was Andy. I walked in to an open-house they had. I really just wanted to get an idea as to what a combo machine looked like. I really didn't expect to be buying, but Andy was so helpful and the machine so impressive that I ended up buying (it did take several weeks of deliberation). What pushed me over the edge was that I was really astounded as to how small the footprint was, compared to my bottom-of-the-line 6" jointer.
