Hand-Mind Connection?

Matthew, I must say the part that spoke to me the most initially was: "For it is Sennett?s contention that ?nearly anyone can become a good craftsman? and that ?learning to work well enables people to govern themselves and so become good citizens.? " As of ten years ago my best ability at woodworking or any mechanical contrivance was picking up the Yellow Pages. Ten years later I now feel as if there is almost nothing I won't at least attempt and more often than not succeed.

I had an inbreed contempt for people that used their hands and now have only the utmost respect for them and have learned so much from people that know how to make or fix things. I am a far better person for this and I understand far more about the world than I ever did because of it.

As to the above quote I am certainly no artist/craftsman but I am competent and love what I do. I must say that from my own experience I agree with Sennett that to truly understand the world/mind you need to understand your hands. Fred

Matthew,

I think it says that you should be in charge of everything and you shouldn't worry too much about the results of that vocaculary test we all took the other day.

Haven't read the article yet but I like what you said Fred.

Michael, thank you. I must say that since I started using my hands I have become a far happier person as well.  :D Fred

Well, since it is now clear that, in addition to hand skills, having a good sense of humor also makes us better I want to nominate Mr. Swenson for sainthood. Oh! just to clarify, that's Mr. Bob Swenson I am talking about.  ;D

Well now Greg, I know neither of them except from the board here but are you implying the Per has NO sense of humor? 8) ;D :D Fred

Seems to me that it's you and your wife who have something to discuss. Taking things into your own hands, and all that.  :D
