Hand tool cabinet?

Anyone care to share pictures of their hand tool cabinets?  I'm fast approaching the point where I could benefit from a separate holding facility for my planes and other hand tools, and so was looking for idea, inspiration, examples.

I searched pinterest.com for "hand tool cabinet" just recently with the same thoughts as you. I'll warn you now .. it's very dangerous, suddenly there's a lot of nice hand tools you immediately see a NEED for [embarassed] [scared]

Yeah, one of the reasons I'm posting on the FROG is also just to limit the field to people I generally trust.  There is such a thing as too much information.

Here's a cabinet I built years ago - solid birch with ply inserts on the door fronts and the back.  Piano hinges offer plenty of strength.  Box-joints hold the cabinet and the drawers together.  I built them as two units - cabinet and drawers - and four screws into threaded inserts hold them together.  A french cleat holds it to the wall.

As I recall, it was a Woodsmith plan that I used.  Been over 20 years since I built it but it's held up well.

Howdy folks.  Long time lurker. Figured it was about time to give you all a good chuckle. I built this mess probably 15 years ago.  It obviously needs some work (not a good plan).  I like your idea Christopher with the planes laying on side. Maybe someday I'll get organized.

I generally come to FOG for information about Festool, however I am primarily a handtool guy. I like to keep the planes I mainly use close to hand, while the specialist tools tend to be grouped in dedicated cabinets.

My bench and immediate cabinets. These are just pine with doors in MDF dressed up with Jarrah trim. I refuse to use good furniture wood on a shop cabinet. It is still possible to look decent.

To the left of the bench is another work station, generally home to a shooting board and mitre box ..

Spokeshaves, braces, rasps, plough planes and saws ..

My marking tools are all on the wall in front of the bench.

I am happier showing off the furniture I have built with these tools, but it is good to see another handtool enthusiast on a power tool site.

Very interesting to see a shop organized around hand tool storage.  You may not be using the primo woods, but the design and finish is wonderful.

Can you show a picture of the end vise on your bench?  I was intrigued by the round handle.

Here is the bench ..

The end vise is a wagon vise made by BenchCrafted ..

The reason for choosing one was that it saved space, and enabled the bench to be 6" longer. That may not sound much, however the total length is only 6'6".

A close up of the handcut houndstooth dovetails at the vise end. A bit of fun.

Those dovetails just ooze craftsmanship to me that's so cool. I may be showing my ignorance here but the smaller triangles can't possibly still be attached to the outer board right? They're almost like an inlay right?

Hey Barney...thanks for the comment. I did that mostly out of necessity. Though hanging the planes vertically is a good way to store them, I chose my approach since it allows for more storage and it's easier for me (at least) to retrieve them.

I really need to revisit the layout and storage in order to see if I can compress things some as well as store some things better.

I'm 5' 9 1/2"  ... my wife says I am taller when I don't slouch

The cabinets are easy enough to get to. The bench is only 22" across. I also now tend to keep many of the tools in use in a tool tray. This is attached to the wall (behind the bench) rather than the bench, itself.

This was taken at the time of building the bench 3 or 4 years ago ...

Just a little fun.

As I mentioned earlier, I love using good tools, but I am more interested in building nice furniture. This is a piece I have just completed for my wife. 90% with handtools.

This has tapering sides and bow fronts (ala a modern bombe). The carcase is Makore and the drawer fronts are figured Jarrah. All solid wood construction.

The chest is 48" high. It acts as a standing bureau ..

It is excellent. This is it on the Stanley #52 shooting board ...

I am fortunate to own an original Stanley #51/52. This was replaced by the LN #51, which was a birthday present ... before the  Veritas came out. I am one of the testers of pre-production planes/tools for Lee Valley, and as a result inherited the Veritas Shooting Plane.

Nice -- you actually have the original Stanley shooting board!  I'm surprised no one has bothered to remake that as well.  The original one costs a pretty penny.
