So I want to build a bookshelf that looks like stairs.  I need some help on suggestions on how I would hang this. Would I do a keyhole style?  I would think this wouldn't be able to handle the weight (it will be floating with maybe 2 or 3 "steps")  This shelf will be 12" deep.  The top of it will start at a stud and then go down.  Any suggestions on this?

Its not going to be boxed in.....its more of just using 3/4" thick board in a series of right angles shaped like a stairs or L right side up and upside down conected......i fuess its hard ti describe on here when you cant actually talk to someone about it

Toggle bolts with plugs to hide the screw heads perhaps?  Or if you can hit studs, to that route.

If you can hit studs and space accordingly you might be able to use pocket screws into the treads to conceal the screws as well.

What is the wall material?

if you build small torsion boxes with removable bottoms, you will be able to use either toggle bolts or heavy duty screws to hold the "stair treads" to the wall for each "stair tread" with out them being seen.

I've taken 7/16"all-thread and drilled undersized hole into studs. Screwed the all-thread into stud with alittle epoxy for insurance. Drill corresponding hole into back of floating shelf, and slip shelf on to the all-thread dowels . Hardest part is making sure your holes are straight and level, because there is little adjustment once there set. On a 12" deep shelf I would have metal dowels protrude from drywall about 8-9".  French cleat would be my second choice if stud layout doesn't allow for metal dowels.
