Have Festool changed the DIA ABRASIVE-D130 PREMIUM (for the worse) ?

I just received a DIA ABRASIVE-D130 PREMIUM along with a RG130.  It looks considerably different to the image shown on both the Festool and the supplier’s website (they use the same image)

Most of the differences won’t make much difference, assuming it is a genuine Festool item, but the lack of abrasive on the external vertical walls will mean it has very limited or no ability to push sideways into the material being ground back. The Festool website images of this and the other "Premium" disks clearly show abrasive on the outside vertical wall.  Is this a Festool change (for the worse) - doesn anyone have one of these that looks like the Festool web image, or do they all look like the one I have, as shown on the attached image.

Contacted sales at Festool UK, but they just looked at the image and said, well, "it says Festool on it, so it must be genuine" ironically it doesn't say Festool on the one on their website, only on the one I received, so I'm not sure if that makes the one they show images of a fake ;-)

I'm in the UK, so would be interesting to know if the disks are the same in the US.

I have never purchased one of these but I have found in my field many technical photos were made of prototypes that differ from the final manufactured product.  In this case I think the disk on the suppliers website is a rendering of the disk and not the final product.

Very frustrating, but Festool does this ALL the time. They do not care to show the exact product image but very often take a generic one. Or they update the product but do not update the picture on the website. If I look at these pictures provided, it looks like the Festool picture is a generic picture from their OEM manufacturer and definitely not the exact product they sell.

I'd bring the disc back immediately.

The image below will show the same disc and this kit is not available in the US. It is not a fake......and yes these will cut on the side as well.

Many thanks for your reply, that clarifies at least that I don't have a "fake", and thanks for the video link, that guy looks like your twin ;-).

I do feel a bit duped by the Festool images though, it is the most expensive disk for an "angle grinder" I have ever bought by a factor of about 5, and to have it not be correctly represented by Festool's own images, is well, disappointing.

Clearly with no edge abrasive / embedded diamonds it is simply bashing its way through anything sideways rather than grinding / cutting as the Festool images suggest it should. But I guess its much cheaper to make a tool with the diamonds on one face only and "bald" sides.  I have to say, in researching the options, that misleading image was what convinced me to go for the Festool grinder over competitor products that showed abrasive on just the circular face.  Perhaps Festool should put images of what they are actually selling for £200 a pop on their site - although I suspect they wouldn't sell quite so many that way

I haven't used it yet as was waiting for confirmation it was the right thing.  Now I have that I will proceed.  I'm sure it will get there in the end, but cant help thinking 'edging' would be better/ faster / cleaner if it were cutting not just hammering its way through.

Usually I'm pleasantly surprised / delighted by the thought that goes into the Festool kit, I have to say this does not meet expectation so far....given there's only ⅔ of the diamonds, can I have ⅓ of my money back please?

It appears you believe that the diamond grit you can see is all the diamond grit there is on the disc (due to the given ratio); but it's embedded in the full thickness of the blocks at the bottom of the disc, during use more/different grit will be exposed, also on the sides. (if you look at the sideview picture Phil posted). (I think the disc in the pictures looked exactly like your as received picture before use)

Well, you might be right, but you would think Festool might mention that the diamonds are embedded throughout the thickness of the pads somewhere....but they don't, so if you're right, that's good news, but could you give a link to where that's mentioned please?

So yes, forgive me if I believed what I received should look like the picture of what is on the Festool and supplier's website, but I think it should, and if it doesn't here should be an explanation to the effect that "current versions of this abrasive disk do not resemble the images shown beacuse....XYZ"

You are correct, the image shown on Phil's post does look like a worn version of what I have, what is doesn't look like is the Festool "marketing image". I can't really determine if there are any diamond particles exposed on the sides from those images, it just looks as if the paint has scuffed off to me, but perhaps Phil could clarify.
