Hi all we've been cleaning out my grandparents house who recently passed away and found a coffee table I wante to refinish. It had a dark almost tar like finish on it that I've sanded down but I'm curious what wood I have here. It is very light and seems soft but the dark pores are throwing me off.

It's no worry it was in my grandparents house and to have it in mine with their great granddaughter climbing all over it is a win in my book  [thumbs up]

Yep, pine. The dark is from the original finish. Pine is good for standing up to grandkids. 8^)

I'm sure it's pine. I've had pine lumber looking very similar. I don't think the dark marks are finish as my lumber looked the same in its raw state. Resin pockets perhaps?
