hi all

i am looking for some software (preferably free) that can be used for saving or downloading pictures etc from websites. i want something that will save the info of the file aswell. such as the file name , website, date, auther, all the boring stuff for references etc etc. i would like a space to write a comment or idea so that i know why i saved it.

Lightroom 3 will help you catalog the photos that you save and allow you to enter the information you mentioned in what is called the metadata.  Downloading the files is a piece of cake from your browser.  In Firefox, just right-click on the photo and click on "Save As", telling the browser where you want to save the file.  Enjoy!

dell . xp os.
currently i do us save as . the problem is storing the info about the pic so that it is easy to use and at hand

You'll need some photo editing software that has the ability to access the metadata.  I'm not sure if there's any free stuff to do that.  I currently use Nikon's Capture NX2 which is good, but getting long in the tooth.  Lightroom 3 is more current in its capabilities, but I think it's a pain in the bumper to use due to its insistence on using what they call "catalogs".  Some of the metadata is inaccessible and contains info on the photo's native state, i.e., the exposure, camera and lens.  Other metadata is open for recording copyrights, location, subject, and whatever else is important to you.

Picasa is free and will do what you want.  It is not, however, a downloading program and you will have to enter the metadata that is not in the EXIF (your comments, website, date downloaded) yourself, but that is true for pretty much any option that is not custom-coded.  There is also Expression Media, Lightroom, and a ton of others but they cost money.  Picasa is great for lightweight asset management.

dont use firefox yet. the problem isnt down loading the pic or what ever it is saving the references for that image . now i have to save the images with numerical file names and use excell to savee the info but this is very slow. i would like to click save as, enter info required and save

How do you plan to search the information later ? Even if you found a browser extension that would do what you want (I haven't looked) you will still need an application to search the metadata you entered, somehow.

first i dont know exactly what i want , i only know what i want it to do for me. i dont need all the camera numbers of a pic. all i want is the references to that pic or document pdf etc saved with the pic pdf doc whatever. i thought some of you computer geeks or people writing for mags or blogs etc might have some software that keeps track of the refernces

I'm guessing your needs are pretty light-weight.  If so, here's an option.

Install Firefox and Evernote (free).  Evernote is an awesome notebook program which can also sync to the cloud and back to your smartphone/tablet/other computer.

Install the Evernote Web Clipper Add on (free).

Set up the notebooks and tags to organize the images that you care about on the dimensions you care about.

When you see an image you want, you just select it in the browser, drag it to Evernote.

There you can click a button to set the source URL, or add tags (pre-defined or new) as you see fit.

Each "image" would live in its own note, but you can save them out from the note they are contained in, and the note can contain all the text you want, as well as a title.

You can then search the notes by tag/note content, etc.

The only downside I can see is that if your collection grows very large, or you are uploading a lot of content, you will need to pay, as the free version limits you in this way.  However, if this approach proves useful to you, it is quite reasonable ($5/month IIRC).

If you had lots of images, however, you'd probably have to separate the downloading and asset management steps and use a proper DAM tool.

didnt try the firefox thing yet, any thing for internet explorer. that web ripper is cool, i put a (not the fog) forum into it to see what pics it would pull up. some lovely pics of the shop and furniture.
