I have a hickory desk top that I plan to dye with General Finishes water based dye stain in medium brown.

As far as a topcoat, I am looking for suggestions.

I do not want to build a heavy coat on the surface, and am looking for a satin sheen.

I was considering the Waterlox.

Thanks.

I'd use General Finishes Arm-R-Seal which you can wipe on after diluting it 15-20% with mineral spirits for the first 3 coats and full strength last coat.  Despite what you read I don't sand between coats because the product goes on so thin it's too easy to sand through and subsequent coats don't dissolve into the dried coating.  Four coats will give you great protection against moisture/scratches and it should work well with your stain.
