High pitched shriek from a CT22?

I liked my CT22E.  It was somewhat more powerful than my 12a shopvac and I could use it without hearing protection.  Never got around to using the tool activated switch, but I am sure that is a great feature.

My wife had a different impression.  The first time she was home when it was on, she rushed down to complain about the horrible high pitched shriek throughout the house.  I haven't any idea what she was hearing, but it had to be something.

Anyone else have this problem?
I have it hooked to an Oneida Dust Deputy, but she didn't mind the shopvac hooked to it, and I don't see why it should interact differently.

I've noticed there can sometimes be a pretty high pitched noise if debris is stuck in the hose.

But maybe she's like Dr. Doolittle, and talks to animals. Try blowing a whistle while you're vacuuming, to distract her.

WHAT???  Oh, you haven't really used your CT yet.  If it is too loud for her, try turning the little green dial towards the turtle.  That ought to impress her.  But then, you may not want to do that, as some have had to purchase a second CT for this reason.

Is the shreik comming from the CT22 or the Dust Deputy?

Donno; I guess I should have tried the CT22 without the DD to see if it still bothered her, but didn't think of it.
But it didn't seem likely that the CT22 would cause a bad noise in the DD when my other vacuum didn't.

There couldn't have been anything stuck in it because the suction was normal.

Can't try it now without the DD; since I couldn't use it with her in the house I put it up for sale yesterday.  Three people wanted it for $250 without hose, despite full disclosure of my wife problem.  Hopefully the new owner isn't married.  But you know, I thought $250 was about the maximum I could possibly ask (plus $38 postage) but it went  so fast I was obviously asking too little.

Toller,

For the life of me, I can't imagine a CT22 making more noise than a shop vac.   I had to put ear muffs or plugs on/in every time I used my shop vac.  With my CT22, I use it all the time at full power with little problem.  The tool noise (sander, saw, router) is much louder than the CT22.   In any case, turning it down about 1/2 way still gives plenty of suction for my Rotex sander or hand sanders but lowers the noise tremendously.

I wonder if it's the Dust Deputy.  Being metal, I wonder if it amplified the noise of the CT22.   I have a Clear Vue Cyclone that I haven't had time to set up.   When I do, I'll check out the noise level with/without the cyclone and post the results here.

I have a Dust Deputy hooked up to my vacuum, too.  I have tried it with an old 16 gal/11A Craftsman vac, and a Fein Turbo II vac using the 2 1/2 inch Craftsman hose and Festool's 50 mm A/s hose between the vacuum machine and the Dust Deputy, and with either the 27 mm or 36 mm hose (or both in series) from Festool joining the tool or floor nozzle to the Dust Deputy.  No such noises as you describe, and hooking up the Dust Deputy does not increase the overall noise level.  Have you considered the possibility of a vacuum leak that is causing whisling?  I note there is considerable amount of air leakage at the tool end rotatable coupling of my Festool 36mm hose, which makes a little noise.

If you had something stuck in the wrong spot that could've acted like the reed on a clarinet the possibility of it being shrill while still having suction exists. I think a more prudent approach, before selling, would have been to troubleshoot: with hose/ without hose, new bag/ no bag, etc. The condition you described is highly unusual for a CT22, but was is not highly unusual is a shrill sound when air passes by a foreign object.

The CT22 moves alot more air than a normal shop vacuum. I have my CT33 hooked up to a mini cyclone that is a little larger than the DD. If I get close to the cyclone I can hear a a high piched squeal. But I can not hear it if I get a couple of feet away from it. The shriek could just be from the large amount of air being pulled through the small cyclone.
