For a while, Festool recon had HL-850s show up pretty routinely. They also pretty routinely got snapped up within 5 minutes (and recall that Anthony's Slack script doesn't even check under 5 minutes...). I've been wanting to catch one, but also know the jointing stand is discontinued Does anybody know of a way to get the jointing stand? If it isn't something that should be publically advertised, feel free to PM me!

It's my most common use-case that would let me sell my jointer. Yes, I said that, so PM me if you'd be interested in a Laguna Spiral 16" jointer/planer combo in Phoenix area. "Eager seller" cuz it takes space...

I've snapped one up from here. I've also seen another one posted in the classifieds and I've seen at least one on Facebook.

Paul, if you haven't already, consider getting a spiral insert cutterhead for the HL850, it makes an already sensational tool even better!

Well, I'm not too impressed with the jointing stand. I purchased one from Uncle Bob and while it was the Grail at the time, after using it I was less than impressed. My original intention was to replace the Delta jointer I have and that ultimately turned out to be a misguided thought.

It's probably great for short, small pieces but for construction lumber it's just too darn short...rather toy-like really. It probably segues more with the current CSC SYS 50 table saw to be honest...there's some symbiosis there for sure.

I used to have the 850 stand. Sold it because I needed to. Wish I still had one.
I bought the stand specifically for small finish / trim type work; i.e. a piece of moulding or 1x that needs to go around a door, fireplace, cabinet, wall, whatever. Looks ok the way it is but if it was planed down just a bit it would fit better and look fantastic. For that type of work the 850 stand was great for me. I could do up to 3' pieces well enough. 4' if I was careful and had to. Beyond that the size of the table was insufficient. I kept meaning to make a custom table extension table for the 850 stand but I also had a big 8" jointer at the time so no point.
If you are going to use it for small detailed work, I would say the 850 stand is great.
If you need planing capability for 'normal' size Lumber I wouldn't get rid of a full size jointer.

Paul I think yer best bet is to post a dd here wanting to buy one, Also check the Craiglist for the major AZ cities and Calif. You might be able to find one there.

I found some good deals on Craiglist picked up a beat up CT 22 that can put a watermelon through a garden hose pretty cheap in Las Vegas .

I have one and Im not giving it up.

Im pretty sure they quit making them as well.

Edited it to add:

Also try calling some larger Festool dealers like say Toolnut. Beaver Tool supply etc, they may have one in their warehouse they might ant to get rid of....

I have the stand. I almost never use it. For small pieces it's fine. Or maybe special use to put a bevel on something not too long. I have used it a few times when it was the right tool for the job. No way it is going to replace even a small "regular" jointer.

The planer rules though. I don't remember if the really large fence came with the planer or the stand. But if you can get the fence (which also acts as the fence for the stand) get it. If the only way to get the fence is to buy the stand then , buy it. The large fence is really good when used on the planer even without the stand.

I don't mind having the stand just in case, but it is not going to replace a jointer.

Just make one. If you follow the original design it's 3 pieces of plywood and a long bolt. 15 min job.

I made my from metal, but it also serves as a thickness planer when inverted. It's also Makita 1805, which makes HL850 look like a toy. I've since upgraded to 1806B.

The large fence didn't come with the planer nor the stand; totally separate purchase.

Aah, in that case Paul, I would get the large fence for the 850 (if you don't already have it) and a smaller jointer to replace your large jointer. I don't think you will be happy using the 850 as your only jointer. Ooor, set up your router table to edge joint.

Should I mention the angle stop last showed in the 2021 US catalog? Part # 485018 for the searching inclined.

The HL-850 is no replacement for a proper “jointer” (“planer” actually as per The King’s English ).

But it is a nice very smooth-running machine that is useful for odd jobs.

I would not be without the stand, though; as mentioned earlier, it is very useful for small pieces where you would not want to be running your fingers over a big planer.  I have used it quite a bit when fitting mouldings into door panels where the depths vary, for example, where it can take a mm or so, or very fine trimming off the back face quickly and accurately.

Definitely worth looking out for the stand if you have the planer.

Cheers
