Thanks Reno for the concern about the quake and after shocks.
I'm up in Auckland so quite far from the quake down there in the south island and had no idea about it all until I had the telly on to watch the news like everyone else. Whilst it's a major with some main roads and rail all gone out of wack they were in a way fortunate that it happened out in the country and late at night and not in a major town during the work day, could have been much worse.
We feel for those going through it all, must be nerve wracking and rather disruptive to say the least to the locals there who have had to leave their homes in the middle of the night and the ground shaking beneath their feet. To top it off, the weather was shite as well for the last few days there, making it tough to start picking up the pieces and get going again. Some smaller towns are cut off but I hear the choppers are ferrying everyone in and out when needs be.
I see frigates from NZ, and the visiting ships from Australia and the US here for NZ's navy's 75th anniversary are helping evacuate too and helping out so a BIG THANKS to all those involved.
I guess they are all just waiting to see if there are going to be any more quakes or aftershocks and when they will subside and they can finally get on with rebuilding. Took quite a while for Christchurch to get back underway as they had to re-zone great swathes of the city due to the ground no longer being suitable for major developments.
I read one thing is the support agencies wish to express their thanks and let everyone know that it's still a relatively safe place to come and holiday and not to be deterred from any plans of visiting the country. Tourism is now the leading earner here over dairy/food/wine exports so I think a marketing camping will no doubt be made and aired overseas to encourage tourists to still visit.
And finally I just read that the 3 cows stuck on the hill have been saved and now on a different farm safe, and will not be treated any differently to the rest of the herd, ensuring their fleeting fame will not go to their heads.

According to Australian News Media; Yes they are back with the heard having been rescued after a track was constructed. There are some reports that others in the heard including calves were not as lucky.
Human death toll is two. Our sympathies to the families affected.

I am in Wellington.
Was in the in-between zone of a base isolated 10 story building the other day... it was eye opening to see the building moving 10mm in each direction from a mere M5.8 after shock 60km away that i heard, but didn't actually feel.
And a brand new 20m deep gully has been created in the Hurunui District ( I think that's a ravine in USAglish) [attachimg=1]
