Hose choices for a radial arm saw

Hi all,

I have a CTL 26 with the standard 27mm hose.  I'm currently setting up a DeWalt DW111 RAS and want to incorporate some dust extraction.  Ideally some table mounted suction as well as a small hose connected to the dust port on the blade guard itself.

Can anyone offer any advice on what size hose I should go for - 36mm or 50mm?  I also have a router table where I might install a DIY version of Incra's downdraft box so I was thinking the 50mm might be the best choice.  Although at the moment I'm just plugging the 27mm hose directly into the dust shroud of the DW625 I have in the table.

Other thoughts, I thought I once saw a Festool product which was a Y-hose assembly.  I can't find this any more but thought something like that might work well for the RAS.

Hi there

On the RAS I would be going with the 50mm hose. The 27mm hose is really for the sanders, the 36mm is for the routers etc. The 27mm hose would be out of its depth on the RAS.

    I had a  radial arm saw with both a top vac connection and a dust hood at the back. My experience is that the top of shroud vacuum connection doesn't do much. Most of the dust shoots straight back from the bottom of the blade. I am not sure that a larger size hose will make much difference. The back mounted hood with a 4" line to a dust collector worked well though.

This seems to rely on the fact that most dust goes straight back which agrees with you Seth. If I can't control the dust then I'll have to find a way to mobilise my garage based 100mm DC which is hooked up to my P/T.

Notice that for a RAS they recommend 4"-5" exhaust hose.

I still own a 12" Dewalt RAS and over 35 years ago the only way for me to come close to controlling the dust level, was to fabricate a boxed sheet metal hood that covered the complete rear of the saw, and I then exhausted it with 4" hose. Long story short, all that sheet metal is bulky, noisy and prevents you from placing the saw where you really want to use it. About 15 years ago I removed the hood and tossed it.

FWIW...If I were to try to control the dust level now, I'd consider bottom ducting through a wider than normal through-kerf in the work table top. That way all ductwork would be underneath the saw. I don't know if it would be perfect but it could be an option and it might work with a 50mm hose because of the small cavity area you're trying to evacuate.

Consider that when using a rear hood on a RAS, when the saw blade is in the fully forward position, the center of the blade is 21"-22" away from the exhaust port. Tough to have efficient dust control under those conditions, no matter how many cfm's you're pulling.

Edit: Just noticed the lumberjocks project you posted, it looks pretty interesting, but it also appears he's using 5" ducting on it.
