Interesting discussion and it's plain to see emotions are running at least "warm".  I am a woodworker first and a Festool Owner Enthusiast but for certain questions asked in the forum like;

I'm a new woodworker and I want to build furniture do I need a Table Saw of Track Saw?  I will always give my many years of experience and say if your going to be building furniture, buy a table saw first.

Now - Do i qualify as a troublesome member?

If so and If I was banished when I first expressed my opinion, I would probably have missed out on thousands of dollars worth of Festool Purchases - just something else to think about.

PS - I also express my opinion at the Mafell Owners Web site that the Festool Domino Joiners (I have both) are far superior to the Mafell Duel Dowler for furniture building.  Perhaps I'll get banished from that site also?

I've been around Internet forums for quite a while, and I've always found it hard to get too wrapped up in what trolls are saying. Hell, maybe that means I am one. I did recently say that a certain Festool wasn't good value for money...

You raise a good question: can the internet in general and fog in particular bring out the best in people?

No. Definitely not. People seem to be mostly considered with personal attacks, false claims (which are hard to verify), etc.

On the bright side, I have recently received very good, honest information regarding several tools I'm planning to purchase. I find the FOG site very informative and sometimes just plain entertaining. I'm becoming familiar with some of the "regulars" and I genuinely enjoy following their posts.

If I come across any negative comments that seem out of line, I simply ignore them and move on. If we all simply ignore the "trolls" they'll probably just go away... After all, they are feeding on the attention you are currently giving them.

I didn't realize the FOG had gotten off track.  There have been a number of ebbs and flows to the FOG over its history.  Honestly, the  the negative posts of late are pretty tame compared to what we have seen in the early days (long before Festool took over the reins).  Do you remember the rather heated discussions that occurred before the great split when a group of members did not like the way Matthew was running it and started the TalkFestool forum?  Do you remember the references (on both sites) to that 'other nameless forum'?  Do you remember the angst of the great EZ Smart vs. Festool track saw debates?  Do you remember the apprehension of the FOG members when Festool took over the forum?  None of us were sure how the Festool moderation would pan out but, IMO it turned out pretty well.  There have been several others as well but, the FOG survived them all and grew as a result. 

Troublemakers true colors are exposed very quickly and most know how to recognize them for what they are.  Some will argue just for the pure sake of argument, engage them and it escalates and turns even more negative.  Eventually, they will either become a valuable contributing member or go away to annoy someone else.  It is the membership and not Festool's responsibility to make the content of the FOG worthwhile.  We all should know how to accomplish that.

Gotta admit I have been trolling several of the recent rant posts and, while entertaining, I just haven't felt I had anything constructive to add so I won't try to start now.

Avoid posting on the nonsense ranting threads and support the more useful ones by posting a comment on them. It's getting harder to find the good info because of all the crap and I think this may be one reason why the old FOGgers (like myself) post less.
