It is winter down here and in the morning (Tuesday AEST) it will be storms with hail and maximum midday forecast temp of C10 degrees. You may  [big grin] but for us that is cold for midday.

Anyway I still want to apply some water based floor varnish by brush to some ply shelving. Any tips apart from cranking up the limited heating in the Untidy Shop?

With thanks.

What I did in Calif in the winter was well before I sprayed the w/b finish Id take container usually 1 gal, pour what I was going to spray into a qt cup  play it in a bucket of hot water let it sit for a while until the viscosity improved then strained it as I pour it into the the spray cup , put the spray cup back into the buck of hot water for a while until I got the viscosity i needed for spraying and sprayed and repeated

You need to heat it up
For water based it needs to be at least 65* F
Heating the material is not good enough the ambient air needs to be at least 65*

Thanks guys. Will see how it goes with hot water later this morning. Have already turned on heater.

Could have other issues today, wind is gusting over 120km, and we have lost two trees so far. Both wattle trees which are fragile in wind. Unfortunately this was one of them, and in similar flowering glory to when this was taken.

On the bright side looks like I will be using my near new German Chainsaw in a few days when this wild weather ends.

Edit. New view from West Deck.

My wife just showed me the utility bill with the monthly usage and the two spikes in Nov. and Dec. were from a portable heater used in my shop trying to perfect a varnish finish.

I can imagine, mine has in the past observed spikes in the graph and correlated them to when there has been lots of planner and thicknesser use!

Today however in the house she has wood heater and RC Conditioner on so I should be covered?!

Since your using the water based varnish you shouldn't have the solvent issues that I faced and I think the temperature as long as it above the manufactures recommendation will be sufficient.

Thanks again all, followed Ron's suggestion re tin and hot water, stirred frequently and also cranked up workshop temp to mid teens C. Worked a treat, so much so that I will use this method again even in cooler rather than freezing (by our standards) weather.

you can  also heat the product with a heating blanket, I wrapped it and tied the blanket with a string, takes a while to warm the gallon can, smaller amount would take less time.
I sprayed a kitchen in March doing this and had to crank the heat up too.

Hi from mid summer here in Finland - yesterday's highs were around +10C and today we have been having a warm day of +13C  [tongue]

[ I must admit that this summer and especially mid summer has been the coldest summer in 30-years according to statistics. ]

At the end of yesterday's storm we have lost three trees, but no damage to buildings. Another big blow expected Friday.
