How do you store your drill bits?

I am trying to get all my drill bits in one place, trying to get some ideas on how best to store them in a systainer. Also looking to get the US centrotec set but it seems there is no space in that for storing other bits - so kind of half defeats the purpose.

Funny you should ask.  I just finished this today.

Nice drawer Jack. Somehow though, that air chuck seems glaringly out of place  [big grin]

Rhino, great use of the three drawer sort.  [thumbs up]

I got the 66-Piece Makita B-51661 Contractor Bit Set in a Systainer. You must lift the top up and
out of the way to access the bottom molded insert to store more.

Good catch Seth! That drawer is next to the exterior door of my shop which happens to be where I air up lawn mower, tractor and car tires ;-) So it keeps it at ready access.

Rhino,

Nice drawers. Did you use special foam for that or just some packaging you had laying around? Any tips to cutting everything out the right size?

Thanks

Thanks TTF,
I used FastCap's Kaizen foam; their extended markers to trace my cuts; and their skinny knife to cut out the foam.  I bought the foam from Kaizen Inserts because they machine cut them perfectly for the Systainers (I have kaizen inserts for L-Boxxes as well). They all fit perfectly in the drawers and come in various thicknesses to enable you to stack the "trays" like I did with this Sortainer. I highly recommend kaizen inserts for their precision and reasonable price (~$12.50 per insert) as compared to the crappy pick and pluck foam inserts available for various drawers.

As for tips, they have all the instructional videos you need on the kaizen insert website.  Be careful, you can become consumed with organizing your tools using this stuff.  I've already been admonished by the wife for not having the same degree of organization inside the house. She clearly doesn't understand ;)

How do you like that kit from Makita? I've been eyeing it as I can't stomach the price on the Festool.

I bought the makita as I was just like you. It is great and offers extra storage below. I bought the couple of festool items I wanted and put them below. Good quality as well.

Rip,
Yes, a couple of the bit holders are PB Swiss. I got them for next to nothing on Amazon and when I went to buy more the price was raised significantly (although the they're now back to $2.99 per strip).  I tried the red ones, which were shipped from China and they are terrible.  I then bought the black toolcool holders and I'm very happy with them. They are less than $1 a piece on Amazon.

Flatsawn or donwon, do you feel like the 66-bit set is sufficient? I'm finding a few places that still have the B-45375 100-bit set available for $20 more, but I haven't found a detailed description of what is included in each set.

I wanted the Festool Centrotec Imperial Drill and Driver Bit Installer Set but it didn't come with much I didn't already have or didn't care to have. The Makita set was 75% less and comes with drills and bits I had but the bottom tray was useful to me.
I didn't like taking out the top tray so I put a few holes in the it and inserted copper rings for handles. Not bad for $50.

This would have made more sense if I could have entered the pic.

I've spent a half hour trying to post a picture of the Makita drill set and all I've accomplished is copying the thread. How that happened I don't know but I do know it's not easy adding pictures.  Sorry

Thanks Rhino,

I checked out their website. Lot of great stuff on there, time to get busy.

I am guessing your pics are just too large, otherwise it should take about a minute to post pictures.

Any 3MB JPG can be shrunk to 150KB or less and look fine online.

If you are using Windows you can use irfanview or any other software that edits jpg's.  I would change image size to 1000 pix and save at 75%(using slider) using save or save as.

Here is a link for irfanview, it's free, safe and works well:http://www.fosshub.com/IrfanView.html/iview442_setup.exe

Once you install the software just use it to open the jpg.  Then click image, click resize. Change it to 1000px or whatever you want. Then click file, click "save as", then slide the quality to 65 or70%(as low as 50%) and save. Rename the file and compare sizes with the original.

To check size of the files right click over the picture and click properties, if the picture is in the MB and not the low KB sizes it's going to take too long to upload to the FOG.

Though not as innovative as some people's solutions, I have my own straightforward but highly efficient drill storage system.  [smile]
