I would like to paint my homemade sysports to look like Festool Systainer Ports.  Systainer Port - 491922

1.  My sysports are made out of prefinished maple ply.  How should I prep the surface?

2.  What brand and type of paint should I use?  Color code?  Gloss or ?

3.  I do not have a sprayer.  I am willing to buy a sprayer to get a good finish.  What would you suggest?

4.  What else?

Thanks for your suggestions...

ETS 125, 240 grit Granat, sand to a matte finish. STIX primer.

Have no clue what paint numbers to use.

Foam or velour roller.

That was quick.

Should I use gloss, semi gloss, or satin?

Thanks Tom!

Most of the Festool cabinets I've seen appear to be semi-gloss.

[member=18283]RobBob[/member] how tall did you make your Sysport units? - to match which other piece of shop equipment height?
how about a couple of pictures, please?

[member=18283]RobBob[/member]  that was a quick response. would you be willing to participate in a BETA Testing Team aimed at perfecting our new  RTA (Ready to Assemble) line of S-Cart modules?
Input from someone who has recently done it from scratch would be very helpful.

We are also looking for a few PRO's who use Systainers in the shop and mobile as well.

Hans,
Ordinarily, I would be interested in participating, but right now I have too much on my plate.

Thanks for asking though.

thanks for responding. Good luck with your finishing project - should be eye catching when done. I'll keep an eye out for pictures.

Hans, I may be interested in helping you out with testing. I built a bank of sysports based on ERock's video last year.

George, thank you for the offer.
Can I start by asking you what interior height you chose and why that particular dimension.
Would you change any dimension if you had to do it over again?

Hans, I'll do a quick write up of the dimensions for you this evening. I need to actually go measure them again because I can't remember off the top of my head. I did follow ERock's dimensions exactly for the width and depth, but I think I increased the height slightly.

[member=43644]Gwerner[/member]  thanks George, we are wrestling with height decisions because matching the 35 7/16 height of the MFT-3 gives you an extended work support when both are used in conjunction. Helpful for jobsite use.
While taller than that provides more space for Systainers with reduced flexibility in use.

Perhaps we should create a new thread devoted to shop built SYS-ports or find an existing one we can revive for this purpose?

Hans, in that case I might not be very useful to you in testing. I built mine taller than that 35 7/16" because I wanted to be able to fit as many systainers as possible. Mine are not mobile, they're attached to the wall. Lastly, I don't have an MFT to test your version as extra support.

[member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] Followup question, please...

Should I remove the thin self stick maple edge banding then paint over the plywood edge after sanding or paint over the maple edge banding?

Thanks!

[member=18283]RobBob[/member],

If the edge banding is on well, just spray over it.

Have you considered a sturdy pullout shelf on units over 35 7/16 matching that height and additional stationary shelves above the pullout allowing for additional storage above?
