My dad gave me the job to design and build a large show piece for his new house. I had found Gary katz article for fire place with recessed tv. here ---    http://www.garymkatz.com/TrimTechniques/flatscreen_mantelpiece.htm

He really liked it, so my design job had a great starting point. This was his list of demands.

-Brings the upper mantle self returns to the bottom of the cathedral ceiling. The total height being 11'6"
-Fit in a  70" tv and hide centre speaker in the back of it.
-He wanted a raised granite hearth witch pushed up everything a little higher then I wanted.
-culture stone around the fireplace (propane)
-He also wanted it to be cheap so he made me build it out of mdf.

After coming up with a handwritten sketch to scale,I drew it out on the wall. I then took my final measurement and built it in our shop.

Now for the good part heres some pics of the mantle being built.

I will Post more pic when its all done, please leave comments, question and criticism. I would love to hear from you.

Gary Katz would be proud that he offered some inspiration.  Great execution.  I think that it looks great!  I also more recently appreciate what you have had to do in a big way.  Thumbs up  [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up]

That looks great!  Can't wait to see it once you have the tv in place and finished.  Quick question, did you get the license plate number of the person who parked in your shop?

Great work!  As I like to say when working on crown returns, "2P10 is your friend."

Hahaha its my dad shop so I guess I can let him park in there!  I cant wait for the space we get in the shop  when his moves into his house, and brings his toys with him.

2p10 is your friend, and the new rubberized formula is even better and more impact resistant.
for the wood mouldings I used 10minutes lepage glue and spring clamps. I find it way stronger.

What finish did you use and what steps did you take for spraying inside. Did you prime before hand. How was the over spray.

Mike I sprayed it with my HVLP fuji mini mite 4. I pre primed with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. Then one coat of finish (portico paint 100% acrylic) in the shop. Followed by finish coat in place. The fuji really only has a bit of over spray, and since its a new build I only had to cover the finished ceiling. Then the painter painted to the mantle

Mike, nice job.  I love the design and the execution is excellent.  Well done.

Here is a couple updated pictures, will post when fully done.

It is pine tongue and groove. He painted the grey first, then painted it with flat white paint. While wet he went over it with a rag.

very cool - just for clarification: was the grey dry before he went over it in white? was the grey (or white for that matter) semi-transperant?
