here are some pics of a window seat I just finished.  it is 36" wide by 101 7/8" LONG  by 24" high... it was built for 2 midgets, as you can see there entrance to there bedrooms doors on each side of the built in....... just kidding... that is into the attic.

I also replaced the sills as they were split into 3 seperate sills and one all the way across looked better.  I also added the 2 sconzas lights with dimmers.

they will be putting  a cushion on top about 3-4" thick  so I did not need to go all the way down with the 1x4 under the sill as it will not show.

I got this client from them seeing my signs on my van.

I used my ro 90, my domonio, my ts55 and my kapex on the new stand.

I already secured the windows so they only open about 8" since they have small kids and this is 2nd floor, and they have 2 other windows in the room to jump from if a fire.

Looks good.

Did you put a door stop on the attic doors?  Don't want them to bang up your work.

This is just me but, I would like to see what it would look like with full over-lay doors?

Nice job on picking up a good one from the van.

Thanks and no I did not they keep them locked but probably should anyway thanks

I was thinking about building some window seats, and have two young boys.  What's to keep a rambunctious child from going right through the window ?

Kreg:

You could do something very unnoticeable like embed a strategically placed small piece of white eraser in a shallow hole. I was thinking of the kind of eraser that is used with electric erasers from the manual drafting days. Since it looks like they could be symmetric, it might look like a cool feature or a button to a secret passage.

You!  Keep n I on your kids and tell them off if they start jumping about to much? Or just make them aware of the danger and let them have fun you cant put bars and billows every where.

My experience with 4- and 5-year old boys is that they do not always pay attention or listen to their parents.  I don't think that is atypical, and I would never forgive myself if they fell out a two- or three-story window because I didn't do everything I could to keep them safe.  Same reason I unplug my tablesaw, router, bandsaw, etc and lock the door when I leave the shop.  Is it unreasonable to not trust my children to not open the door or not play with Daddy's tools even if they know they shouldn't ?

kreg- a screw will keep the window from opening, but it wouldn't keep the pane from shattering ?

Well I'm still here your still here I don't know about your parents but my parents where never oh don't do this or that to dangerous cus they made me aware of the dangers thats all I use to clime trees at that age taller than a normal size house even built a tree house at the age of 8 with my mates with rope pulling pallets up made a zip line to get pack down. So just standing on a simple window seat seems to be being over precautous to me.  Also your assuming the window is just a single pain glass not double glasses or toughened cus don't know about yours but double glazed or toughened glass is pretty hard for a 4/5 year old to brake.

When I was a kid we were allowed to walk all over the neighbourhood until dark.  Now it is not safe to do so.

When I was a kid we never wore seat belts because it wasn't the law.  Then when seat belts became the law,we were taught to buckle the belts behind us to make the warning bell turn off.  Would I let my kids do any of that ? Nope.

My mom walked me to kindergarten (about a mile away, across a moderately busy suburban street) my first day.  After that, I was on my own, and made the walk either back or forth 4 times a day.  I still remember running across the street in front of a car and nearly getting hit and the car skidding across the road.

When I was a kid of about 9 my mother would let us drive the car on deserted country roads with her in the passenger seat.  Would I let my kids do that ? No freakin' way.

My mom also left my sister and myself in a car with the engine running.  I remember thinking that "we were wasting energy", and trying to stop it.  I also remember putting the car into gear and the car driving itself across the street, and my sister screaming in the back seat that she was too young to die.  Trust me, I am never leaving my kids in the car with the ignition on if they are not buckled in their car seats.

When I was a kid we did lots of things that I wouldn't let my kids do.  I am indeed still here, but that doesn't mean it was a good thing that I was allowed to do them.

Not saying it is.  But walking the street is a different thing now crime well in the uk has gotten worse so when it was safe to leave your back door open and allow your kids to walk the steer has gone.

But doing things has not changed like you mentioned driving a car did you not have fun? Did you not enjoy doing these things? Don't you want your kids to do them things aswell?  I know I look back at my youth and I'm glad i was able and aloud to do the things I did I loved it.

From the age of 5 me and my mates always went on our bikes straight after school to the out door swimming pool on our own summer and winter  cus in the winter they filled the football pitch with water so it would freeze so we would ice skate on by our selfs. Loved the slide cus we all use to hold as much water as possible so no more water was going down the slide then go on our knees using our hands to push faster to stay ahead of the water.

once we had 9 or more of use we held so much water on the slide that we could actually swim while goin down the slide. another time we decided to use soap cus we thought soup makes things slippery so we might go down the slide faster so we poured loads of soup down the slide and covered our knees with soap the entire pool was like a bubble bath when we got to the bottom we where banned for 1 week.

I use to walk my german shepard dog i was only 5yrs old on my own round my area the dog was taller than me he was well trained though I never had him on a lead he always walked next to me. I never see any you kids walking talks in the uk especially on der own.

I gone abit of topic really forgot what point I was trying to make lol!

screws are easily snapped off if the window is lifted up quickly with the weight of a window sash and enough force applied. a 10d nail will bend and likely wedge the window open but a screw will snap. screws have no sheer strength like a nail does. that is why screws are not approved for framing a house in most areas.  nails or bolts because they will bend and give, where screws will just snap off. no sheer strength.

i would of would fastened a couple wood blocks inside the window frame to stop the sash

Yes, we all had fun driving the car when we knew we shouldn't.  I want my kids to have fun, but they're not going to have fun driving before it is legal for them to do so.  Not if I have anything to say about it, anyways.  Let's just say I've done a lot of other things that were fun that I wouldn't want my children to ever do.

Seriously?  Maybe you're thinking of drywall screws.  They easily shear or snap.  That's why they're only meant for drywall.  Deck screws, Kreg pocket hole screws, SPAX screws and many others have a very good shear rating and I can use deck screws in place of framing nails if I want.  Thinking about it, I'm sure plenty of people have seen Mike Holmes on tv using nothing but screws for framing.

Be very careful about drilling a hole(s) in a window sash to install a blunt nail as a security lock.  I've had to have glass replaced in sashes because people drilled too close to the glass inside the frame or have destroyed the integrity of the window sash frame.  There are better security devices for windows that don't do any damage or change the insulating properties.
