I registered for this forum about a week or so ago, but didn't own any Festool products... until today.  The courier just left and I have my new Domino 500 kit with CT 48 HEPA... also have the TS55REQ on backorder for May 1st.

Only problem is that the systainer of dominoes won't arrive until tomorrow, but I'll be testing out the cutter soon!

So it begins!!

My first Festools were a sander and CT, it has gotten wayyyy out of hand since then!

Have fun. :)

Hi Jamie,

Welcome to the FOG!  [smile]

Enjoy!

I will be interested  as to your thoughts on the CT48 when you are up and running.

As the longest registered Canadian member here, I welcome you Jamie (the shortest registered).

I hope you find this great forum to be of as much assistance as I have found it to be.

Ditto on that. The big 48 is kind of a rare bird.  I measured one at my local dealer to see how high in the air my Oneida UDD would end up if I mounted it on top of a CT-48.  Wow, kind of up there... [embarassed]

[welcome] to The FOG, Jamie,

First of all, you were most welcome to post here before you purchased any Festools, but I am sure Festool is very glad you are now a fellow owner.

Bummer that your Systainer of Dominoes did not arrive with your Domino 500, but soon that will be made right.

Your CT48 came with a 27mm x 3.5m AS hose, which is necessary for your Domino and future Festool sanders.

My suggestion is that you amend your TS55R back-order to include a 36mm x 3.5m AS hose. My experience and that of many other professionals is that the slightly increased stiffness of the 36mm hose keeps it from hanging up on the guide rails as much as the softer 27mm hose. Also, with the larger hose your dust extraction with the TS55R will improve. I also suggest ordering the accessory plate to cover the opening in the side of the saw, which also improves dust extraction.

One way to get a deal on the 36mm hose is to order one of the cleaning sets which include the 36mm AS hose. With the cleaning set you can stay tidy as you work.

Another tip, when using the Domino, which will not use a 36mm hose, turn the suction to maximum on the CT48. With the Domino 500 the more dust extraction, the better. Same for the TS55R!

And he comes roaring out of the gate ladies and gentlemen!!!

Welcome to the BEST FESTOOL you will ever own, FOG!

Congrats, you did it the right way, got some great pieces of the system up front!

[welcome]

Sounds like you plan to make a lot of saw dust !

Tell us how you plan to go about filling up the CT48  [big grin]

Thanks for the welcoming all!

I was watching a video for the TS55R tonight and saw it mention that the 36mm hose is better and added it to my online shopping cart.  I already had the Compact Cleaning Kit in the cart, but maybe I'll take another look at the larger cleaning kits that have a hose included.

I'm wondering what length of hose is good for ripping 8 foot plywood.  I figured a 5m would give a bit more slack without being too long (especially if I get the boom later), but what are some of the opinions in the group?

edit.  Nevermind... I see that the boom arms have an extension to make the 3.5m hose work okay.

Jamie,

You are right, the boom arm comes with enough 50mm hose as an extension that the 3.5m lengths of 36mm or 27mm work fine. Actually, with the Boom arm having extra small hose sort of defeats the purpose of the boom arm.

As for the 36mm hose, when using a cleaning kit I find I prefer the 5m length in the shop. However, the cleaning kits are designed for cleaning clients homes, and there ease of carrying the hose is sometimes important. As for sawing 8' cuts in plywood, that is a routine task since normally we make the long trim cut first so as to have a really clean and straight edge from which all the other cuts are referenced. Remember, hardly ever will the 4' edges of a shet of plywood be perfectly square with the long edge or parallel with each other.

Anyhow I find that so long as I am using 36mm AS hose the 5m is not a disadvantage for the TSxx saw.

When you do buy Festool sanders, the genius of the CT extractors is the ease of djusting the suction. That is very important when sanding, since too much suction pulls the paper into the wood and you want the sander to sort of float. Therefore what works best for me and a whole lot of experienced woodworkers is keeping the CT close to where we are standing, so we can easily reach out and make the suction adjustment without having to walk to the actual work. For that the 3.5m length is ideal. Remember the Domino, the two smaller routers, the jig saws and all the sanders only work with 27mm hose. The OF2200 router really needs the 36mm hose and so does the OF1400 router.

As long as the CT is kept close to where you are working, the 3.5m hose is easily sufficient for cutting 8' lengths.  You might need to move the hose out from the end of the rail once you get part way through, but it is easy enough to manage unless you are doing LOTS of cuts of that length.  I've never used the boom arm and still only have the stock 27mm hose.  While I do have the 36mm hose on my "wish list" - I have no plans to order either the boom arm or a longer hose (will be getting the 36mm 3.5m hose).

I generally have the dust extractor very close to the end of the piece or even underneath it (obviously with enough clearance to make sure I don't cut into the tool) while making those long cuts.

I haven't seen a CT48 in person so I'm not sure if the added height will make getting it underneath the workpiece impractical (I have a CT22 and that setup works well for me in many cases), but close to the end should work for now.  If you are frequently making lots of long cuts like that the boom arm will probably make sense.
