I have a DF500

I’ve gotten into building some Bookmatch coffee tables, dining room tables etc. all made from 1.5-2.5” Walnut. So far these tables have only been about 36” wide and 6’ in length and I space them using 10x50 dominos about 1’ apart along the jointed edges.

How wide can I go using 10x50??

I also using mending plates screwed into the bottom as well as the table bases and even a couple Walnut supports to not only attach the apron but also screw into each side of the jointed table top.

I’m not wanting to purchase a DF700

I find for long grain to long grain glued joints, the Dominos are mainly to assist in alignment. As long as the jointed edges are true (done with a jointer), You probably don't need anything bigger than 6mm. You should expect wood movement however.

I agree with Birdy.  When gluing face grain to face grain, the strength of the joint will not be an issue as long as your surfaces are straight and you have a continuous film of glue and good clamping techniques. 

Alignment is the concern.  I used biscuits and they worked fine. You can cut grooves in both boards and run a spline.  You can use conventional dowels--you have lots of options. 

But if you want a new piece of equipment, don't let me stand in your way. [big grin]

I think in answer to your question, you can go as wide as you like until you find you are having glue up problems.

The dominoes are to help with alignment and glue up - not strength.

The main thing about wide glue-ups is don't try to do too many joints at one time. Do sub-assemblies and then glue those together to get to the total width
