I want a Planex

Try going to www.festool.co.uk  Then search the dealer list till you find a dealer with a web store. If you have a credit card place an order and you are good to go.

How much is shipping, it must be horrible.

And could you imagine paying the shipping cost every time you need abrasives?  And then there's the question of whether the model runs on 115V or 230V.  And service.  And warranty claims.  All complicated by the possibility that the dealers in the UK are contractually forbidden from selling outside the UK.

I want one, too. We just had our 90-year-old house checked for lead paint and miraculously the tests were negative, so now I have the green light to sand away all the peeling interior paint!  (And there's plenty of that work to be done.)  Sure I could buy the Porter-Cable model, but my experience with Festool makes me believe that I'd get a better value from the Planex, even though it's probably three times the price.

Maybe they're available in Mexico.  Maybe I'll buy a new Rotex and glue it to a broomstick.  :P

Regards,

John

You can buy either 110v versions or 240v  the 240v are rated between 220 and 240.
As far as being contractually forbidden from selling outside the UK they aren't and it would probably be illegal to try to put that in a contract.

I have burned up one Porter Cable, I got it used so who knows right.  It is a nice machine, I just want the Planex.  It all fits in a Maxi systainer, how sweet is that?  I dont care about getting the Vac with it either.  I have the Porter Cable one and another Ridgid both with plenty of bags.

From the videos I have seen, the Planex looks like it can kick the PC's butt!!

Well, I tried to order some Festool abrasives from an American website that shipped all over the world, but after filling in all the info the website told me they could ship anything outside the USA, except Festool.

I bought a brand new planex second hand off ebay in Jan 2008 - only because I simply HAD to have it (I had an apartment to renovate in Paris and the idea of putting up new sheetrock -2nd floor, no parking.... was too depressing) and my local dealer had it on order and never produced it - he's since gone bust -but the delay was probably Festool's fault - they don't carry any stock here in France.  It is all it's cracked up to be - but be warned if your ceiling is uneven at first you'll build up some big muscles until it gets smooth enough for the vacuum to take the weight -it's a heavy beast (reminds my better half of Alien) - with the dedicated Festool vac I can hang it from a smooth ceiling.

Try toolsave.co.uk - I buy a lot from them to bring back to France, but they will ship abroad (it's just as they are near my my mum I pop in when I'm over.)  If you don't get any luck via the web and mail - call them direct and ask to speak to Dave (or his brother Fred)  If that doesn't work I'd better buy some brown paper and sticky tape and get ready to send you one.
I get the feeling that its a US invention that Festool have copied and I know there are many cheaper versions around, it's just that they seem to have brought the usual festool magic to the project.  Obviously there is some dust, but not much, you can vary the speed and the suction and the pivoting head is excellent.
Sorry to go on

Here it is on the UK site:

http://www.festool.co.uk/mediandoweb/index.cfm?ID_O_TREE_GROUP=3669&sLanguage=EN

Using a currency converter, the sanding rig is about $1200 US.  For the set, I see they have it matched with a vac that appears to be  different from the models we have here in the US.

I would buy one of these things in a second.  We do enough drywall and plaster work that it would be well worth the dough.

The videos that show the incredible Lewinsky suction of that thing are amazing.

I just bought two Festool sanders and my guys have used them on plaster and drywall, and the DC was very good. THis a[[rpoach isn't suited for large jobs, though.

That is all I seem to have stacking up this year.  A bunch of good sized gut and re-do's.  A couple big basements to finish and a bunch of rooms in my own house.  I just dont want to have to get the PC again.

This tool would sell like crazy here in the states.

I have heard a mix of reviews about the PC sander.  Some guys say it's great, some not so much.

I was talking about a UK company. The UK is in the EU and no AFAIK no contract can prohibit cross border sales due to EU laws. AND FWIW I have had Festool products shipped to both Japan and Thailand from a UK Festool dealer.
