If You Have Trouble Signing Into the Forum...

Everyone,
I've received several e-mails from people who experience problems signing into the forum.  Sometimes, it is someone trying to register for an account.  Other times, it is someone who has had an account for a while.  Almost all the issues fall into three categories:

• You forgot your user name or password (or both)
• You wish to change your user name or password (or both)
• You haven't received the welcome e-mail to register for a membership
• Your user name and password don't seem to be working

A lot of people simply decide to create a new account when they forget their user name or password, experience problems registering, or do not receive the welcome e-mail.  This is not the best way to solve the problem!!

When you create a new account, your old account is still active -- your user name is still officially taken.  You end up having to create another user name.  This is confusing for you.  Also, if you have been posting for a while with your old account, it becomes difficult for people to see your posting history, since it starts all over again with your new user name.

Please, it is better to e-mail me with whatever information you have and I can figure out what happened to your account.  That way we can preserve the user name you wanted.  Almost all the time, the problem has to do with a simple data-entry error.

Some hints:

• User names and passwords are case sensitive!  That means bob999 is different from Bob999.  Remember which one you used!
• If you entered the wrong e-mail address, you will not receive the welcome e-mail.  Without the welcome e-mail, you cannot complete the registration.  Most of the time, when someone enters the wrong e-mail address, it is off by just one letter or number.

Matthew,

I have on occasion had trouble signing in.  I think it's happened when I sign off but leave the browser looking at FOG, and then sign back in later.  Sometimes I'm told I don't have access to that page.  Just doing it again gets me past the problem.

Sorry I can't be more precise.  It's not a frequent enough annoyance for me to turn on the flight recorder.

Ned,
The problem you report is different from the ones I was describing.  I'm talking about those problems which clearly block someone from using the site.

However, I'd be interested in knowing if the problem you reported happens to anyone else.
