In wall Niche

In the last few weeks I have had a couple clients from across the pond. (London England)
Both of them have asked me if I could install a niche. They also mentioned and arched or domed top. I have not seen anything like that here. Is this common in Europe?
Can they be purchased pre-made.
I ended up building a rectangular niche for the first guy. Basically a cabinet without the door, set into the wall.
The other job is still out there.

I had a German girl friend who was having problems understanding my English.  i had problems understanding her German.
I tried to learn a little of her language and i ran into a problem.

she taught me to say "Ya" before she taught me to say "nicht"
that's how she caught me. 

nearly 50 years later, i dare not say "nicht"  OOPS, wrong spelling! [unsure]

Such niches are fairly common in England, and you see them in some American colonial-style houses, too.

Often, the arched top is carved in a shell pattern, some made of wood and some of plaster.

I remember seeing an older issue of Fine Woodworking that showed how to carve one.

Niche is french --it's a recessed area in a facade or a wall usually meant for a statue. Usually with an arched top.
