Ingenious way to decide where to cut the hole on the roof for the chimney pipe

As soon as the bullet hits the first thing, its trajectory can't be trusted. Look at the JFK "magic bullet" for proof (jk).

A plumb bob for the first hole would work just fine, and take it up from there with a 24" drill bit.

That from an official NY State website.  They don’t say what the punishment would be for violating that regulation. 

It could be a fine, or incarceration.

So, ingenious—yes.  Smart?  No.

That reminds me of some of my college days. We rented a basement as roomates, and one day, we got bored and did what teenagers do -- stupid things, what else? We decided to fill a few buckets with sand and placed them with some Yellow Pages booklets behind them by the corner of a wall as our shooting targets.

We ran wild, but soon the landlord, living upstairs, knocked on our door to ask if everything was ok. We cleaned up everything, but to our horror, bullet holes were everywhere behind the buckets. The combo barriers didn't stop the bullets at all!!! [scared]

That is an awesome story. If that really happened, I would have gladly paid to see it happen. Speaking of the "chimney pipe situation".

Similar method with fewer legal and neighborly issues is a laser level.

That predates the self leveling lasers probably.

According to the editor, the story was heard at Tim's recently. Perhaps the frugal fellow didn't have any more use of a laser tool.

A closer reading of the rules shows that not only does it require the permission of the owner of that house, but also permission from all the other residences within 500 feet.

Where I live, I have a 25’ setback from my neighbors to the right or left.  So those houses are 50 feet from my house. 

Depending upon the neighborhood, the front setback is either 50’ or 100’. 

So I would need permission from the owners of about 12 homes to discharge that weapon.  And I suppose that for litigation reasons, I would want that permission in writing, and it would be best if a lawyer wrote the permission form. 

I still think it is ingenious but stupid.

Of course if your house is on a 25 100 acre lot, you don’t need any neighbors’ permissions.
