Time to tap the great minds of the FOG once again for some finishing advice.

What would you recommend to refinish an ipe deck around an indoor basement pool? The deck is about 7 years old, and I believe the original finish was Penofin's Interior hardwood finish.

The pool is in its own room separate from the main house with a separate HVAC system. One issue is how long it will take for the finish to dry as it is not as if you can open a window so any air changes would have to depend on the HVAC system.

A non-toxic or low-toxic product would be preferable.

i would drain the pool and stick a dehimifier in there for a day or 2 to take most of the mointure out of the air.

is thare not any windows in there.

Alan,

It's a sub-basement pool room- no windows at all. The HVAC system is specifically for pool rooms and includes a dehumidifier. I would definitely drain the pool first but humidity is not an issue.  I can lower it to 30% no problem and the HVAC system can change the air in the room 3 or 4 times an hour.

There is a sealed door and another door between the pool room and the rest of the house so I'm not even worried about fumes getting into the main house. I just want to recondition the wooden deck.

We just installed a Ipe tile deck and used the penofin hardwood exterior formula.  We pre stained the tiles so curing wasnit an issue. I hope the penofin lasts for several years.  Do you know how long it lasted on the deck you are refinishing?  Is it an option to use it again?

Watco Teak Oil. We have used it on wood decks and surrounds for hot tubs and motion pools in luxury home spas with surprisingly good results.

The deck was installed in 2005. It could be an option to use it again, but I was looking for less smelly options since we are living in the house and it is winter now.

Thanks all for your responses.
