Well I've never owned an iPhone but since having an iPad 2 for close on a year I think I want one.  My laptop is about goosed & I'm trying to decide between a Macbook air or MacBook pro ?  But that's another story.

Anyone know when the new phone will be realeased or what changes there will be ?  The net is full of speculation but you don't know what to believe.  A lot seems to think it will be realeased in October.

I know there are Apple haters out there so if you don't mind staying away from this one  [smile]

Thanks all.

I have an '09 MacBook Pro, iPad 3 & iPhone 4S. The whole ecosystem & iCloud really works for me!  As far as your question, you never really know with Apple & their speculated releases!  The best you can assume is that the new phone won't be out before October. I'm guessing they will try to release their next iPhone before the holiday season!  My guess is as good as yours and all of the other rumors swirling about the web!

No one knows for sure on the phone!

As to the laptop, I have both the Air and Macbook Pro. If you need long gattery runtime, you definitely want the Air. If you purchase through Apple's online store, you can configure them a little bit more than you can in a physical store. I have a fully maxed out 11" Air that I really love as the screen is about identical to the iPad, has about the same physical thickness, weight yet still offers a full real keyboard. Runtime for me is around 6 hours of hard use while my older MacbookPro 15" only lasts about 1 1/2 hours.

Hang out for a MBP 13 with Retina display - shouldn't be too long. Expect the iPhone 5 before Christmas ... iOS 6 will be something that the iPhone 5 will capitalise on.

On "haters" ... I've got more Apple gear the some small stores! ... but I must say now that Apple has been on top for a little while I've noticed they've become an effective benchmark for competition. To create a good product, you make something better than Apple and it is happening (look how Siri has been completely trumped).

One thing about apple is there's always tons of speculation about upcoming products and very few actual leaks. So it's really up in the air about what they are going to announce and when. As far as Tablets go, I'm most interested in how the MS surface will hold up. If it does a good enough job, and there are doubts, but if it does turn out to be fully functional it will be THE professional tablet to beat.

As far as smart phones go, always interested in what Apple is going to announce next but they haven't really done anything startling the last few product releases. none the less interested to see what an iphone 5 will bring to the table, especially now with Jobs out of the picture.

Still in love with my 11" MacBook air, does all we need at home, although I still contend that 90% of the population can do with just an iPad.

iPhone 5 ? NFC! NFC!

Buy lots of apple gear, I bought AAPL at $30....[biggrin]

I have a MacBook that I bought in 2006 and it is still going strong... however, I do recommend you get some device for backup, as two hard drives have crashed, and I did loose a lot of good stuff. I might suggest you consider something with expanded graphics memory. My MacBook has too little and tends to crash when I do complex Sketchup files. I have read some negative comments on the new MacBook Pro, and I cannot comment from personal experience.

Got an iPhone 3GS and it still works just find and dandy. Might get a 4S when they release iPhone 5, presumably greatly discounted.

I would go for a full retina screen lineup if purchasing a new Apple product today i.e. iPhone 4(S), iPad 3, the new Macbook Pro and wait for a retina Air.

My wife is using a Macbook Pro 15" from 2008 and apart from a new battery acquired a couple of years ago it just works.

I have an Apple Time Capsule on the local LAN as a Wifi access point and all our Macs do over the air backups to it. It's Apple sinple to take into use - just plug it in and the Macs pretty much ask you 'Would you like me to make backups to your new Time Capsule?'

I didn't know they were bringing out a retina air but suppose its only natural.  The price would be much higher though, just look at the price of the 15" pro.  Kinda set a limit of 1 - 1.2k GBP for a 13" laptop.  The time capsule sounds a good bit of kit.

I suppose I will just have to wait & see what develops with the phone over the next few months.  I will probably be getting an IMac 27 before the end of the year if that makes any difference to my laptop choice ?  iMac upstairs, laptop would live on the breakfast bar in the kitchen for all to use, the iPad never leaves my side  [big grin]

Apple is so great about marketing their products - very secretive and they let all the bloggers and tech writers give them free press. They make incredible products. I think it's a safe bet to say the new iPhone will be out around October to go along with the IOS6 release. That, and they have a track record of releasing a new iPhone every year. With so many Android phones coming out with faster chips, more memory, better camera's etc, they have to keep refreshing their products to keep up with competition. Only once did I move away from Apple and get an Android phone (the Nexus One - Google's flagship phone at the time). I still kept my iPhone home and used it on my wifi network. Not only was my iPhone faster for web browsing, it actually received my Gmail (through Microsoft Exchange) FASTER than Google's phone. I found myself using my iPhone more than the Android phone. When my son threw my Android phone in the water, I wasn't too upset - I took the sim card out and put it right back in my iPhone and I haven't thought about switching again. At the time everyone was making a big deal about Adobe Flash - how phones needed it. I used Flash once on my phone, but ultimately Steve Jobs was right - HTML5 is where most web pages are going (I don't know the technical details behind it, but there are few web sites now that only run Flash). Regarding laptops, Retina displays are nice, but for the price they're asking, I'll go with a Macbook Air and save the coin. I happen to agree with Fritter that most home users would be fine with an iPad - the only downside is no storage for files like a regular computer. You can buy a bluetooth keyboard for an iPad if you don't like the virtual one. My MBP is now four years old and I have no desire for a new one. One hard drive crash (THANK YOU TIME CAPSULE) - I sent it in to Apple and for roughly $300 they put a new hard drive in, replaced my aftermarket Mushkin memory with Apple memory, replaced the logic board (motherboard), and display. Essentially a new computer for $300. Downtime was under a week door to door. Kind of sounds like Festool service.......

How many iterations of Plug-it have there been? How many I-device sync cord designs? ;)

Plug-it isn't there for me - particularly in relation to CMS .... so How many iterations of Plug-it have there been? - not enough!

I did have a laugh the first time I plugged my iPhone into a new Audi ... the phone displayed a message saying something to the effect that my iPhone accessory was out of date and I should look to upgrading it  [eek]

Woodguy, I was an Apple "disliker" for years, not because of their products but because I despised being tethered to iTunes. I could not forego a PC due to business software needs and iTunes never worked well for me on the PC. I grabbed an iPhone 4S the minute I learned that it no longer had to sync via iTunes. I love it, use iCloud now for all my music & recently got my wife a 4s and grabbed an Apple TV for my office (no digital cable box in here).

That got me pondering the MacBook Air but I still had the business software issue. Recently I found out that there is Mac software that lets you run Windows 7 side-by-side on the Mac (Parallels or VMWare Fusion) and now all I am waiting for is to see if there is going to be another hardware update later this year. There is an iPad in our future as soon as I can convince myself (read "my wife"...) that I "need" it.

I guess we both have drifted over to the dark side...

Don't forget that all Macs come with Bootcamp standard in the OS. That means you can run Windows right at bootup and use it as a regular PC. Mine gives me the option of which OS to boot up once I turn the computer on. I also use Parallels which is great when I don't want to shut down or restart the computer to use a Windows only program....

The problem with the virtual servers and Bootcamp and other tools to run Windows on a Mac is the cost of Windows... Woodguy, welcome to the dark side. Those of us over here have found it to be an enjoyable experience.

I had doubts about moving over to Macs when a second hard drive crashed (never had that problem with a PC), but I got over it and do regular backups now.

Well thanks everyone for all your advise.  From reading through all the posts it seems hard drive failure is quite common ?

I like the idea of the time capsule thingy  ;). Really should get into the habit of backing up more often.

I have iTunes on my pc at the moment.  Can't say I enjoy iTunes that much, just use it when I have to.  Is there another way ?
I'm sure if I spent a bit of time with it I would get used to it more.

Thanks guys.

I don't want to take the thread OT. The original poster was really just asking for advice choosing between two Apple products. I started reading closer to the end where some of the more recent comments were about the merits of Apple's products and the company in general.

Hard drive failures are the most common kind of hardware failure. They have lots of precision moving parts. Solid state drives should be less failure prone, but I hear it still happens. It's always critical to have a backup system in place and the ability to replace the drive is an important consideration to me. I prefer being able to do that myself as opposed to paying and sending it in.

HTML5 is becoming more prevalent for the same reason that webmasters are still supporting the quirks of IE7. If you want users of those browsers to visit your site, you need to cater to the browser.

If you sign up for iTunes Match ($24/yr) you get to upload all your music to Apple's cloud and then any Apple device you have linked to the same iTunes account can download or stream the music from there. It basically reduces the need to access iTunes unless you are, for example, ripping a new CD and then you have to add it to iTunes and it will sync with Match.
