I've been thinking about Japanese Handplanes lately and would like to learn more about them. YouTube doesn't seem to have what I'm looking for (what kinds of planes are available and their purpose), and I figured someone on FOG must know about these.

My local Woodcraft has one that's about fifty bucks but I've heard that there are better selections out there. Can someone point me in the right direction on resources to learn more?

Thanks!

Toshio Odate has a great book on Japanese woodworking tools. I highly recommend you read it before starting your journey into Japanese handplanes. My copy is a few years old now, but I think I have read somewhere there is a recently updated revision.

I have a few as well as the usual Japanese saws, with a set of chisels thrown in. Most of the planes you will find in the $50 range are what the Japanese call beginner planes. One source that I looked at when trying to decode the various types of planes was https://kakuritools.com.

The Japanese Tool Co here in OZ has a good range, and I believe they ship world wide:

When I get that urge, I open their catalog, I admit it’s nicer in print than online, though. …

Or I check this site:
