Made this for the wife for Valentine's Day (didn't post as I had lost my FOG mojo for various reasons)

It's just some scrap black walnut and a piece of quarter sawn oak

That's not small [eek]

I'm guessing there's a lot of space for "apology jewellery" for all of the tools you intend to buy in the future [wink]

Nice work.

That's the best looking use of scrap wood I've ever seen.  Beautiful work!

How did you achieve that impeccable looking polish?

Thanks, Mike A.

Are the feet of one piece of wood or three laminated pieces? The feet are definitely my favorite part of the box.

Beautiful work. I'm sure your wife was delighted with the gift.

I'd love to do something like that, but there would be no room for the surprise in our house - my wife would be asking questions all the time I was in the workshop! Maybe I need to finish all the other jobs so that she's less interested in what I'm doing and I get less of the "what are you up to? Have you sealed around the window in the bathroom yet?" comments...  [unsure]

Particularly like the lid design. Is it glued strips or veneered?

Thanks guys for nice comments

[member=30413]mike_aa[/member] I used a couple of gloss lacquer rattle cans then flattened it back with 1500 wet and dry then buffed it back with G3. to be honest I only used what was to hand down the shed. I was surprised how well it came out

[member=42383]Tayler_mann[/member]  The feet are solid oak I made a 100mm square. then rebated it around on the table saw. Shaped the curve with a sanding block by hand then cut it into 4 with a slight bevel on the chop saw

[member=11629]GarryMartin[/member]  The top is solid oak I routed the grooves about 5mm deep and glued a strip of walnut in. And by the way me and the wife have got to the stage where she doesn't ask  what Im doing when I say "Im going down the shed" .
Having said that she still feels I spend too much time down there

Some nice tips and techniques there [member=32795]VW MICK[/member] - thanks for the response.

I think that's maybe what I need - a shed in the back garden. I think the attached garage is too easy to pop a head round the door...  [wink]

lovely looking box, very deco, nice medullary in the quarter sawn, thanks for posting

I've saved loads of these bits of oak. The box was actually going to be about half that size (it's about 550mm ) but I just couldn't cut the board when I got it on the saw so decided to make it bigger. And I tried to add a deco flavour as my wife has some jewellery of that type

Really nice and well thought-out piece.

Thanks for elaborating on the techniques used as well.
