John Lucas RIP

I just found out from another WW site that John Lucas/Woodshop Demos has left us.
A sad day for those of us who have enjoyed his comments and observations here of the FOG and most of all his Woodshop Demo site.  I am sure he is surrounded with many beautiful assistants and is playing with hundreds of new tools and has a very spacious shop to work in.

JOHN R. LUCAS

LUCAS, JOHN R., born February 5, 1937 in Visalia, CA to parents Alexander Ramsdell Lucas and Margaret Beattie Lucas.

He graduated from Rutgers University School of Journalism in 1959. He then joined the Navy and went to Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI and received his commission in April 1960. In the Navy he served as Anti Submarine Warfare Officer on the destroyer, USS Frank E. Evans DD754. He served on two cruises to the Western Pacific.

In 1963, he retired from the Navy and took a position of Assistant Editor at Johnson & Johnson, in New Brunswick, NJ.  Later he joined Union Carbide Corporation in their marketing department and was in charge of new product development.  In 1976, Lucas joined the Charles Beseler Company as Vice President of audio visual products.  In 1980, Lucas left Beseler to setup his own production company Interactive Learning Systems. Under this name, Lucas worked with many major corporations including Metropolitan Life Insurance, UPS, GE Financial Services, Emery Air, and US Postal Services.  In 1999, he retired from that business and started a WebPage for Woodworkers.  That business took off with the never ending presence of the Internet and interest in woodworking.  His site was very popular with readers all over the world.

Lucas is survived by his wife, Sandra (Sawyer) Lucas, son John R. Lucas, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Mill Valley, CA, and their children Kaitlyn and Jackson.  A daughter Diana L. Flemma and her husband Thomas of Lakeville, CT and their children Isabella (Bella) and Lucas (Max).  He was the brother of Elizabeth Ann Lucas of Ft. Pierce, FL.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American ALS Association of RI, 2915 Post Rd., Warwick, RI 02886 or to Kent Hospital Foundation, 455 Tollgate Rd., Warwick, RI 02886. Arrangements by Winfield & Sons Funeral Home.

Several questions have been asked about John's website and its future.  There is a message on his website from his wife stating that she will be maintaining the site and its contents for the immediate future.  His cd/dvd of the content on his site will be available until the current supply runs out.

I ordered a copy today so that I can help members here better.

I just ordered a DVD.  It will be great to have this memory of John and I am sure that I will learn from it for a very long time.

I did the same. I wanted to have something to remember this great guy. Nothing better than his DVD. I hope there is no region code restriction for Europe.

Wow that is very sad. I haven't been on the FOG for awhile and not something I was expecting to read when I logged on.

John has been very instrumental in helping me down the slippery slope as well.

This morning I received the ordered DVD. When I browsed through the pages, my thoughts went back to my first steps in serious woodworking, over 5 years ago. His reviews and tutorials were pleasant reading stuff, although a lot of tools were not available in Holland. His writings gave me a good understanding of the American way of woodworking.
A few days ago, I was reading one of his postings to the FOG and discovered an icon was added to his name. That was a very neat and fitting gesture of the moderator.

Wim,

The DVD I ordered has been opened and I looked at the artwork.  Haven't quite had the nerve to put it in yet.  Shane, Forrest, and I did have discussions of what to do and Shane made the changes so that hopefully a new member wouldn't PM or email or ask a question on the Forum of him.  I was not aware of the new icon until your post.

John is officially an inactive member, but that is only in the physical sense.  His spirit lives on.
