Jointer Planer Combo

Looks awesome - the mobility kit could be handy.

Do much long stuff? You could need some extensions if you do.

I would seriously look at the Hammer J/P for not much more if I were in the market...not a knock on the Laguna, but I think that the Hammer or MiniMax machines are built a little better -- beefier tables with webbing and castings.  I have a 12 inch Hammer that has been in service for several years and it has been great.  The newer ones are even better and now you have a chance to buy it with the new Silent Power cutting head that is helical with curved cutters that overlap slightly so no scallops or track marks.  Plus it is supposed to be 50% quieter in operation than other machines.  Just my .02.

I also need to get a jointer/planer combo or separate units all with helical cutters but the Felder 16in costs $11,095 vs Laguna's $4,495. that's  2+ times more. Also, I was told to look at Grizzly's site. Some have suggested  that a separate parallelogram jointer may offer conveniences that a jointer/planer combo can not, and that some Grizzly's machines are very good, (a 20in planer & a 12in jointer) both for about $5000 . But I do not have any experience to suggest any. I am hoping members with such experience chime in to help you. I am a beginner DIY.

I have about 1600 bucks in my 16" jointer and 24" planer, all cast iron and built for a lifetime.

To WarnerConstruction: which?where?how?I do not want to spend more $ than I need to.Help.  To Jalvis: sorry I checed the Felder only. Do you know if the jointer/planer combo machines have parallelogram infeed/outfeed tables  or are they dovetail sliding type tables?

To C. Robinson: I also am looking for help in deciding what to buy in a jointer/planer combo or separates. And not wanting to hijack your post ,I initiated my own.It is very similar to yours, and I thought this is the way this forum wants thing done.I hope I am doing the correct thing.

Beware - WarnerConstruction is a restorer of historic heavy metal (search some posts) ... the "hunks of junk" he's turned into magic are amazing.

Both my planer and jointer are from the 40's.  Yates American 24" planer and a JA Fay & Egan 16" jointer.

I got the planer at an auction for 400 bucks, put another 400 in it by the time I had it back together (I got the grinder and bar for it too).

My 16" jointer cost me about 800 bucks and 100 bucks in repairs.  I found it on CL.

All my equipment is 3 phase though, which helps keep the purchase price down.

And you are posting this publically?  [blink]

I hope you have good security...  most people would use a bank for that.

(You might want to take it out while the tools are running, too, for that matter...)

;D

To fdengel: that's funny!.    To Wconst. That explains it. An acquaintance just bought on auction an older Powermatic  massive, extremely large & heavy jointer for
