jointing to boards at different angles

Not sure exactly how to explain this but I'll give it a shot.  I'm building a garden bench for the missus and the back is made of mostly vertical 1x2 slats with a couple of "x's" in between.  I have a domino to join the slats to the horizontal rails but I'm scratching my head about the X's.  As you can see, they will join at two different angles so how do use the domino to achieve this joint or do i glue and use a nailer?  Maybe just use the middle width on the domino to allow for the space?

Angles can play havoc with your thinking.  But it's actually simple in this case.

Place two marks across each intersection.  As long as the Domino machine face is flush to the face, it will place a domino perpendicular to that face when you plunge.  So place one at maybe 1" in from each side of the short pieces and a reference line across to the long piece.  You will end up with four dominos in the long piece - two from each face, and two from each of the two short pieces where they mate to those lines.

Make sense?

It does.  I was never good at geometry!  ;D  Now I see what you are referring to.  It's still a right angle.  I just have to ignore the other angles.  Thanks!

Yes, the Domino is going to be perpendicular to the "joint line", which would be "square" to the longer piece's side. It would just not run "parallel" to the length of the shorter pieces. No big deal, as long as you stay far enough away from the side so you don't cut through it.
