When I say weight is one reason it's not recommended, I think it's more from a control perspective. Just being able to handle and manage a router the size of the 1400 in that horizontal position. I don't think there's any concern about effects on the plate or arm.
Chuck, generally, I don't use the 1400 with the edge routing accessories (since I have both the 1010 and MFK) but I know it works because I've done it a couple of times.

Having been to two Festool classes and had a great time [thanks], perhaps it is time to consider a "Camp Festool," two week, 12-step program for tool junkies with lots of honeydoo projects. Hardwood not included. [eek] Barbeque and cameraderie every evening [drooling], rotating BBQ chefs with a prize for the best meal at the end (Festool gift certificate).
