Good Morning,
After our successful first contest in May, we're ready to move ahead with the next one.

This month's category:
"Small-Scale Projects."  Any project posted in the Member Projects board or the Adult/Child Projects board is automatically entered in the contest.

This month's prize:
Either an ETS 150/5 or an ETS 150/3 sander.  The winner chooses which one.  The winner will be announced on July 1.

There are already several great projects in the "Member Projects" board that fit the "small-scale" theme.  I hope this contest inspires more members to build something that qualifies and post it, with photos and explanations of their building process.  There may be some questions about what "small-scale" means, and we can work that out in the first few days of the month.

This month's judges:
Brice Burrell
jonny round boy
greg mann
Eiji Fuller
Matthew Schenker

Remember, any project in the "Member Projects" section is automatically entered in the contest.  You don't have to do anything special to enter except post your project.

For a refresher on the basics of the contest, click here.

Everyone, please use this space to discuss your favorite small-scale project and what you like about it.  Judges will also weigh in once in a while with their opinions.

Let's make this another successful contest!

Thanks everyone,
Matthew

That sounds great. I'd like to enter my baseball bat, but I didn't use any Festools. I could use the sander on my next one though. ;) I will post a few pictures with the recipient of the bat, and with the engraving that was done on it.

Matthew,
I wanted to ask last month, How were the judges selected? and shouldn't there be a fifth judge in the case of a tie? I would be willing to be a judge for this month's contest. Maybe the fifth judge could be always the previous month's winner.

I did not question the last months judges qualifications, but in my mind I was "OK, Im good with Brice and Matthew as judges, but who are the other guys?"

I think that maybe the judges should rotate so they have the opportunity to win aswell.

I was appointed a judge because I volunteered - since I'm in the UK, I can't enter, so figured I'd put myself forward. There was a 5th judge, but that was Nickao. I think the winner being a judge the following month is a good idea.

How very dare you! :o ;) ;)

As I said, I'm ineligible to participate, so the opportunity to win doesn't apply. Still, when I volunteered I assumed the judges would rotate every month anyway. I only think that they've stayed the same because the contests are in their infancy. Once they've been going for a while, I'm sure issues like judging/rules will be ironed out.

PS - Congrats on your winning project - I expect your full review of the router on here soon! :P

Eiji, the current judges are discussing the idea rotating the judges in the future. I suggested that we ask you to join since we lost Nick. Matthew is officially in charge of the contest so lets wait to hear what he thinks.

I'll let the Jonny and Greg fill you in as to whom they are.

Eiji,

No need to go into my qualifications. Suffice it to say I was wise enough to pick you.  ;D

I would like to re-up my previous entries and I'm working on more for future contests. In the future, I will do a much better job of documenting my work. I would just like to say, these contests are a fantastic motivator to really push the imagination to new levels. Good luck to everyone.

The above post was under my BILs user name. Please re-direct it to my user name. Thanks.

Well it's Matthews's football er, Festools, so he gets to make the rules.

If I were to be picked as the fifth judge would I have to quit????  ;) ;) ;) Tongue firmly in cheek.  : ::) :o 8) Fred

Fred, you might as well be a judge you already own every tool in the catalogue.

Steve-CO, I am struck numb. I am missing so MANY tools yet and have not yet begun to collect.  :) ;) Fred

Good Afternoon,
Just wanted to let everyone know, Eiji Fuller has joined the judging panel for June.
I've edited the first post in this discussion as needed.
Let's see some more small-scale projects!!

How do you define "small scale"?

Sometimes, it will be obvious.  Other times, I think we'll have to use our judgment.  In the next few days, the judges, and everyone else, can weigh in on the projects that qualify for this designation.  We'll work it out.
Matthew

Mathew, I am still quite confused.  Some examples would help.  Are the biplane shelves that we built (see thread:http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=2843.0) considered to be a small-scale project?

I would say yes, that is a small-scale project.  Again, some things are obviously small scale.  other times, we'll just have to ask and see if it counts!
Matthew

I'd say that we need a definition of 'small scale', and I'd like to offer a suggestion;

How about any project where the overall dimensions (when multiplied) do not exceed 8 cubic feet.

So, if it fits within 2'x2'x2', or 4'x2'x1', or 8'x1'x1' (you get the idea!) then it's included.

That's large enough to include Bill's boxes & segmented turnings, Woodgeeks water stand, Charles' writing desks, Frank's Biplane shelves, and a whole host of other 'smaller' projects, from jewelry boxes to bedside cabinets & coffee tables.
