Kapex 120 second hand purchase questions

Hi all Festool fans,

I'm looking into buying a mitre saw.

I checked the second hand market online and there is a seller selling his Kapex 120, complete package.
Only note from the seller is that it has a motor issue and does'nt run at full power anymore. Repliers to his ad has suggested
it's possibly the anchor.

He sells it complete with Systainer and all the extra goodies for 50% of the retail price. Machine is from 2012.

Has there been any update on this Kapex 120 mitre saw since 2012?
How likely the motor issue easily to fix by replacing some parts?

Is it a fair price or a too good to be true offer?

I see another ad where that seller states he replaced the anchor of the motor and now will run as new again. He sells at
75% of new retail price.

Is there a common problem with the motors on the Kapex and how heavily used will the machine be when this issue comes up?

Hope to get some replies,

Kind regards,

Guido

Hi Guido, welcome to the forum.

The kapex 120 EB hasn't had an update that I'm aware of since 2012.

I think it's very likely the issue is resolved, but I would definately have the working order of the machine demonstrated to you in person (as with every used tool you want to purchase).

There is no common problem with the 220V motors of the kapex that I'm aware of, (There is however a very common problem with the 110V version, you can do I search on this forum)

The percentages of the price you mention wouldn't be a reasonable price (way to high). But I found the ad on 'marktplaats" , and the asking price is 590, which is 38,6 % of the current retail price in the Netherlands including tax, and 46,7% if you look at the price excluding tax. So I would say it's an ok price.

Hello Frank-Jan,

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly the ad I was looking ad. Would you purchase it?

If they ask 590, and a new one costs about 1200 I would say it's 50% of the retail price?

The cheapest I've found for a new model is 1151 including tax.

Welcome to the FOG Guido.

Unless you're very confident with repairing tools from Festool I would stay far away from a deal like this. You really don't know what the problem is and before you know it "goedkoop word duurkoop" (cheap sale becomes expensive sale, dutch proverb).

I have bought many tools through marktplaats, many good ones and also many broken ones that needed repairs which I've done myself, but I've learned to stay away from tools that require repairs on the motor or electronics because those parts are just very expensive, so in the end you save nothing.

I bought a used Kapex 120 with UG cart and extensions last year, the saw is a 2009 vintage.  The only issue with the saw when I bought it were a small chip off the edge of the vacuum connection.  I paid 65% of the current price for the package.  I've been using it hard with no issues.

You mention a Systainer???  There's no way a Kapex fits into the footprint of a Systainer so what did this hold??

A systainer that holds the extra accesoires, like the clamp and angle measuring device, I guess. The ad mentions a systainer and shows a picture of it.

Guido, sorry for the confusion, I misread the ad, I thought it was the price for the fixed version (because I read your story, and it said NOW 590 above the ad). (and I took the listprice from the festoolsite).

I'm not sure if the other one is from the same guy.

Hi Guido,

    Welcome to the forum!

Purchasing anything used always has risks. I would say that if you buy the 50% saw you need to factor in a large repair bill. Depending on whats wrong it could end up costing very close to the price of a new saw. And you would have a functioning used tool with no warranty.  I would want that for about 75% off.    The already repaired saw I would want for less too, and I would want to see the repair receipts and documents.

I contacted the seller again about the motor issue and if he can demonstrate it working.

He says the machine is running but doesn't have any power, Therefore it stops when you want to saw a piece of wood.

I think I will let this one pass, or someone must recognize this issue and know it's easily to fix.

I'm skilled enough to replace parts myself, but afraid for hidden costs like expensive electronics.

There is another ad ad well, Selling for 550. Machine runs super but the button to fixate the blade is not working anymore.

Otherwise it's just getting a new one.

Good call to let this slide, Guido. A motor repair is around 600 Euro, no way one should risk that.

You could try to acquire one through Madevtools as I have done. A nice hardly used demo model at a very reasonable price.

I chased up several second hands but all had a story behind it. A good condition Kapex with retail receipt, about one year old was just
300 euro's cheaper than a brand new one.

So I purchased myself a brandnew one. Then at least also have the 3 years warranty.

It's a huge beast. And the laser is great.
