Kapex - First Real Use Review

Bought the Kapex last year from Bob Marino and chose him largely because he supplies a superior manual for Festool purchases.  Am I allowed to plug for him?  No?  Oh well, too late.  Great delivery execution and love the user's manual.

Since buying it the Kapex has behaved beautifully with everything working perfectly without any setup fine tuning.    That said however the saw had never really been challenged until last week.

I have my Kapex mounted on a Makita stand that is rather heavy duty because the Festool stand has not impressed me with its strength.  For three years I have gathered rough cut white oak for making raised garden beds for my wife.  My inventory ranged from 2" x 6"  in lengths from eight to twenty feet and some 2" x 8"  about twelve feet long.  All the oak ranged in age  (my ownership from green rough cut) from  six months to three years and it has been stored outside in the weather.  I bought a three row ball in-feed stand from Rockler and used the marginal wings on the Makita stand on out-feed.  I cut all the oak in either seven foot lengths or three foot lengths.

I made all the cuts on lower than optimum speed because green or rough-cut lumber that thick can react violently when those stresses are relieved.    Lower speeds are harder on the saw, but a lot safer for me.  I made roughly 1,000 - 1,200 cuts in the 2x6 or 2x8 rough cut white oak.  I used the Festool blade.  I now have all nicely polished board ends on all this lumber for my raised garden beds.  The saw was magnificent.  That's my review.  Pretty dandy saw.

Complaints?  The deck of the Kapex is powder coat aluminum.  After dragging all that rough lumber including dirt particles and "stuff" associated with stacked lumber outside . . . . .  after all that pushing and pulling, etc.  I have no scratches down to metal.  There are surface scratches in the "paint", but nothing down to bright metal.  That means I will have to further endure family members remarks like, "Well, I see you still haven't actually used this saw! " ,  stuff like that.    I'm thinking of going out to the shop with a file and scratching up the deck a bit.

Glad u like the Kapex.  Hopeful u get to really test out the saw on a more detailed  project soon.  The Kapex will really shine then [big grin]  No matter what u are cutting, the saw makes it a better experience!

I just got mine this week and I'm excited to list my Dewalt on Craigslist this weekend.  I couldn't believe how accurate it was out of the box.  Is that supplemental manual available in a pdf?

Hi Valleywood

The Kapex really is the mitre saw of choice for any serious woodworker and cabinet makers. I am just finishing a solid walnut pedestal desk and have had tons of Kapex action along the way. The ability to swing from left 45 deg to right 45 deg for matching mitres is superb and absolutely accurate.

By the way, you should not plug dealers so blatantly, it is never ever done here on the FOG  [wink]. Even from my side of the Pond I know that Bob Marino is one of the best dealers in NA and a very active and thoughtful member of the FOG. Rob Lee is pretty good in Canada and Warren Smith at Toolfest here in the UK stands out as well - he too is an active FOGger.

Now remember, no plugging dealers  [smile] !

Oops, sorry Peter. I hope people realise that my tongue was firmly in my fat cheek.

We all benefit from the participation and discussion about the various dealers - everyone needs to know the best place to get kit.

I picked up a Kapex recently since really needed a good, portable Miter Saw - my DW-708 with it's stand was just too heavy and big to move around.  I also purchased the Kapex stand and extensions.  It is one sweet setup and well worth the $$$.  What I like the most about the whole setup is the extensions with the metric scale.  I laid a new hardwood floor and it was so nice measuring down to the millimeter using my Festool Tape Measure and then going right to the Kapex and making the cut without having to measure and mark the piece beforehand.  I would just line it up with the extension scale, make the cut and be exact - talk about a time saver.

Plus, I paired it with a new dust extractor with the 36 mm hose and it is so nice not having sawdust everywhere.  My DW-708 threw it all over the place.

Thanks for the review!  I have been on the fence with this saw... SO MUCH SCRATCH for this guy... End result is I think I am going to just bite the bullet.

The manual that Bob ships is the PDF.  He has it professionally printed on heavy paper and bound if I remember.  Very nice gesture.
