Kapex question

Hi,

Can someone give the total depth of the Kapex? My Bosch SCMS needs 36" from front to back and therefore is taking much needed floorspace.

Also, because Festool sometimes makes users only use their accessories, I'm wondering if it's a must to use original saw blades?

Thanks,
Andreas

Andreas the Kapex is about 31" (790 mm) and no you don't have to use Festool blades. I recently picked up a Tenryu and I know a few people that are very happy with Forrest blades.

Hi Bryce,

Thanks for the info!
Was just looking through your review and as a result you almost pushed me over the edge  ;D
So, the Kapex needs 31" my Bosch 36"... bummer I was hoping that I could gain more space....

Yeah, its not really that smaller than most other saws. I always thought some people's comments about the forward rails allowing your to push the saw right up against a wall to save space was a bit deceiving. When the Kapex's size makes a big difference is in carrying it. It's light, compact and well balanced making much easier to carry up stair and through doorways than my old saws.

Hey Brice - are you saying the Kapex can't be pushed up against a wall? Or does it just swap the rail space from the back to the front? If the rail space moves forward, then the support tables would be much closer to the wall and would save me space while not in use. I - like Andreas - thought the Kapex would be much more compact depth wise compared to my Makita LS1013.

No, the Kapex can be pushed up against that wall but it's a tremendous amount smaller than my Makita 1213 at about 36" or so with the rails extending all the back. Don't get me wrong you do save 5" or 6" with the Kapex and that is something in a small space.

Can't speak to the distance part, but someone else already answered that.  As to  blades, you can get other brands.  I looked into Forrest, since thats what I use on the TS and they make them.  However after asking the same question here prior to purchase, decided to just go with the stock blade.  Have to admit for what I do (cut wood), the stock will give excellent results.  I love mine.

Stupid me... I have no idea were I got the 36" from.... The actual total depth I need for my SCMS from bosch is 45"! A whopping 14" more then the Kapex. Therefore i looks like that I will have to peel out the money for the Festool.

I use the Forrest ChopMaster on my Kapex and love it!  The stock Festool blade is decent, only 60 tooth, and I prefer Forrest blades, have used them for years.  I use the Festool blade for cutting 2x's & rough lumber & use the 80 tooth Forrest blade specifically for moldings.

Just make sure if you get the Forrest ChopMaster you get the one specially made for the Kapex with the appropriate sized arbor.

Having never been able to see one for myself, I was one of those people who always assumed the Kapex would be huge a space saver.

I'm still curious as to the minimum depth required for the Kapex to be used safely on a countertop. That is, from the back of the saw to the front of the support feet. Looking at my LS1013L I see that I need a minimum of 29 inches, which of course never seems to work out conveniently for me.

About 23 1/2" from the back to the front feet.

Wow, I only used the Bosch slider once so I don't remember how big it was, 14" is a lot of space.

This is an issue w/ me too as I'm thinking about trading in my Bosch 4410.  But I'm confused, the Festool website says" Dimensions (W x D x H) 28" x 19 3/4" x 18 1/2" ((713 x 500 x 470 mm))".  None of these dimensions are as large as the 31" you mentioned.

Can you help me on this?

Thanks.  karl

Karl, I get about 31" from the front handle (miter table lock) to the back of the cord wrap/rear handle.

When you have the Kapex in its "transport" position, where the saw is lowered and the miter table swung over to the 60 degree position, it is 28" x 19 3/4" x 18 1/2".

Thanks dj,

I'm moving and going to be setting up a new shop where space will be at a premium.  I'd like to have a miter saw station along a wall.  The closer things can be to the wall, the better.

So one more question - when the saw is set up and ready to work, how far is it from the rear of the saw to the face of the fence?  Or said another way, if the saw is set up against a wall, what is the distance from the wall to the front face of the fence?

Thanks.  karl
